Default Trying to find a mechanic in illinois i can trust with the mustangs

Hey Mustang Fans
The 2009 has just landed and my wife and i are now proud owners of two (09 & 05) V6 mustangs. We are having the dealer install the FRP performance kit on the 2009 and will pick the car up in a day or two. The issue i am having is trying to find someone i can trust doing work on our mustangs. I have two sets of GT sway bars and i have the 8.8/3:73 rear ends that i want to get put onto the cars but really have no trust in "JOE THe Mekanik". I have not priced the install thru the dealer because they will probably be way to expensive.Anyone in the state of Illinois that can offer guideance would be greatly appreciated.

Do the sway bars yourself but make sure you snug them up tight so they don't make unwanted knocking sounds while driving. Take the cars around the block after the install and listen for any new noises and then give them a re-snug after you get back home.

Call around to some gear and rear end places and see who's been in business the longest. Get some quotes and talk with them about what you want to do. There's not too much they can do to screw up a swap like that, unlike a gear job which takes a talented mechanic to pull off correctly.

Above all don't go cheap because you always get what you pay for.

sometimes it's a misconception that the Dealer is more expensive. I guess it depends on the dealer. In many cases, the service departments are competing for your money just as hard as the independant guys and they are trained better in the ways of Ford....

Ask around.

i say " trust no one with your cars" spend your money on tools and books. if you dont need a hoist to do it, you can do it at home. put the trust in yourself

Sorry I have to disagree with this one sir...some people just dont belong working on their own cars.. If you dont have a thorough understanding of how everything works...then leave it to the pros

While this might be good advice for some, it certainly doesn't apply across the board. There are a lot of people in this world who are not mechanically inclined. I know, I'm one of them. My brain isn't wired that way. I envy those who are.

On the other hand I don't think that guys who are mechanically inclined really understand how difficult simple jobs can be for those who aren't, as evidenced by the above post. It isn't about being smart or dumb, but rather about how the brain sees and processes this type information.

I have two college degrees and a very successful professional career yet I struggle with a wrench in my hand. My high school drop-out brother who has had no formal training in anything can just look at something mechanical and understand how every part works together even if he's never seen that particular thing before. It's a gift not all of us have.

i know, that is true. i was half joking when i wrote that. but i wont let anyone work on my stuff unless its just way out of my hands. i was brought up poor, we did and fixed everything ourselves. i`m like your brother i guess, no education, but i can build a engine from scratch, and about anything else. plus all the trades, plumbing, elec, carpenty ect. i`d rather have the education and a decdent job and let someone else work on my car, i just cant.

Default If you can wait

If you can wait til it warms up I can help you install the sway bars. Its really not that hard. I did mine on a hoist. But I think I can do it with a floor jack and stands. The rear ends are too much for me. I hate working on cars in the cold.
