Alright, I got a 2007 V6 and recently purchased a JLT CAI without the tuner (A friend told me that you can install any CAI without a tune and it wont hurt your car any.) But when I got it, it came with a warning that said not to put it on your car without a tune, or "MASSIVE ENGINE PROBLEMS WILL OCCUR". So just out of curiosity, besides not having as much HP out of it as I would with a tune, what kind of "problems" would "occur"? This mustang is my crash course in cars (I work on jets... can you say irony?) and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for any imput you can offer!
The extra air flow will cause your engine to run lean, which is harmful to the engine. Having a proper tune will correct your air/fuel ratios to keep your engine running safely and give you some extra HP and torque.
hi, welcome to the forums. i had a brother that retired from the army, went into the air force, retired from that then had his own company working for the gov. for a while. anyway, the warning is there for a reason, and it would be best to pay attention to it. your gonna have to buy a tuner to use that cai. ( which is what you want) there are a few brands that say no tune required.

there are only a few that don't require the tune your beat bet though is to get a tune for the car and intake. I purchased the roush cai and it says it doesn't require a tune. But once I got a diablo and put on the dyno the found it running fairly rich so they adjusted that. But as they say be sure to tune it because of safety and you get all the performance the cai offers.
There are a few CAI's out there that don't require a tune but that's because they restrict the airflow down to stock ratios so the performance gains are minimal also. They're basically a real cool looking accessory under the hood that doesn't do anything.
A good CAI requires a tune to increase fuel flow because it allows a lot more air in. If you run a CAI without increasing fuel flow you will run lean. Some folks that don't know any better put on the CAI without a tune and say they don't need one because they have all kinds of power without the tune. That's true. You'll have plenty of power in that lean condition until you burn up the engine. Engines do put out more power when they're leaned out. It just doesn't last that long until the engine needs a rebuild.
