Default advice on gears

i own a 07 V6, and i keep hearing about changing gears and rear ends, i want to know what would be the best for my car, i dont race, i just want something that will help me leave my friends in the dust. i dont plan on going with a super or turbo, only CIA, exhaust, tuner and maybe ignition coil. so no real huge horsepower gains in the future.

so which gears should i upgrade to, and what kind of price ranger does it cost, just parts, and how many hours does this kind of swap take?

I have the same car. I'm ordering my gears in about a month because its expensive if you can't do it yourself.

3.73 gears are very popular for people that use their mustangs as daily drivers. You will see a good increase in acceleration but you'll it won't be too brutal to drive around town.

4.10 gears are the other popular option. These gears will give you better acceleration that the 3.73s and will really sit you in your seat but I have heard driving around town can be a little annoying.

you will loose a few mpg from 3.73 and a few more from 4.10's.

Basically lower gears (higher numbers) will make your cars rpms go higher in order to reach certain speeds.

Since your not going forced injection you can keep your 7.5 rear but i do reccomend getting t lok installed when you do it.

Or, you can buy a complete 8.8 rearend from newtakeoff.com for about a grand, ready to install.

If you can't switch out gears and add t lok yourself, you will have to go to a local autobody shop and they should be able to handle it.

Expect costs up to 500 dollars for labor. Gears are about 175 and same with t lok so your looking at around 900 with tax and shipping.

Good luck and if you do it soon let me know how it works out.

Btw get your tuner first or at the same time so that you can recalibrate your speedometer for the new gears.

thanks man, and i realize now i abreviated cold air intake CIA.. ill go with the 3.73 and the t lok. i already have the tuner right now, ill just have to figure out how to change the speedo, all i know how to do is to take off the govoner and the octane tunes. but this is someting im gonna do after i get CAI, exhaust and some other smaller things, wont be for a while.

To adjust for the gears, you'll just have to reflash the tune after make the adjustment for the new ratio. It's pretty straight forward..

If you do get gears, you should definitely get the posi differential. Even if it is just raining, it's pretty tough to catch traction with the open differential. If you move to 3.73's or 4.10's, a posi is pretty much necessary, IMHO.

Installing the gears is tricky, I would only take it into a shop that you trust and know will do the job right. Also, its not cheap. As posted previously, gears and differential will probably be roughly $500. IMO, it makes sense just to buy the whole 8.8 rear end from newtakeoffs.com. It comes with the posi differential and you can get 3.73 or 4.10 gears. The install is a lot easier, can be done by yourself if you have the equipment, plus you don't have to worry about a bad gear install. Just my opinion...

And I meant $500 to install the gears and differential, that doesn't include the price of actually purchasing them. Sorry...

That is basically why I am going with the 8.8. I cannot wait to get the new rear end in there!

if you do highway driveing go 3.73. i was gonna do 4.10 till i looked... at 2000 RPM with 3.31 i ger 68.48 MPH
with 3.73 62.30
4.10 54.50

3.73's are a little more pep, with a little more gas as stated. but not so harsh on the highway!

plus i called about 30 places, noone has 7.5 inch 4.10's in stock. motive is waybehind on back order. and guess what motive makes the gears for FRPP 3.73's are everywhere.

If you are getting rid of the govoner I would get a new dirve shaft first. The stock V6 d/s isn't rated above 115.
