Default 2008 V6 mustang with bbk cold air intake question?

I have a 08 v6 mustang that i have dual exhaust on and about to install a bbk cold air intake. bbk states that no retuning of car or readjustment of computer is needed. Well the directions that came with it say something slightly different, it says that the car may burn too lean, and a higher octane fuel will be needed.

1.) If car is running too lean what kind of problems would i run into if i didn't run a higher octane fuel in it?

2.) Those of you that have the bbk intakes, did you have to run a higher octane fuel in it?

I appreciate any responses to the questions. Thank You!

Running "lean" will lead to detonation, which can cause catistofic engine failure if left unchecked. The gas basicily explodes before the piston reaches the top of the stroke, and puts huge stresses on the bearings/rods/pistons. In a diesel, this is not a bad thing, in a gas car, it is terrible. Don't mess around. Tune it, with a sct or diablo or the like. I know, they cost money, but so does a new engine. You can get a used one cheaper on E-bay or craigslist (a tuner) but just like anything, you take your chances on what kind of condition it is in, and if it even will work or is unlocked from whatever car it was linked to to start with. The BBK is a great intake, but it really needs to be used along with a tune or it can lead to problems. Some of the intakes claim they can be used witout a tune, but if they do, then they probably arent letting in enough air to make any difference over stock. A BBK WILL outflow enough to make you run lean, and without the tune, you run some pretty substantial risks of damaging your bottom end.
Good luck. Hope this helps.
Bill.

I have been running a BBK intake with no tune for a couple months now, and no check engine light or anything has come on yet.

But this was probably not the smartest way of going about it. I was too excited and pulled the trigger on the CAI prematurely. I am in the process of saving for that tuner, and hopefully get it as soon as possible, but I would recommend you purchase a tuner with whatever CAI you get. It will be better for your stang, it it will bring out the most of your new intake...

Oh, and to answer your second question, I have been running 91 octane the whole time, anything less would probably not be a good idea...
