I want to have a T-lock and 4:10 gears installed in my 2005 V6. Has anyone had this done at a shop and how much did it cost you? Also do the 4:10 gears decrease gas milage?
I asked around, and found it usually was between $400-$500. It may actually be more cost effective to purchase an 8.8 rear end with the t-lok and 4.10 gears already installed. You can find one on newtakeoffs.com. If you can install the rear end yourself, it will probably be cheaper than purchasing the gears and t-lok and having them installed. Plus, then you dont have to worry about a bad gear install.
Buying the new rear end is a viable option, especially if you're planning on putting some major power into it. If you do purchase a new rear end, make sure you get the one with the V6 flange, though...

Yea thats a good idea but I wouldn't be able to install it myself and I dont really plan on any major upgrades such as a turbo or supercharger. I'm only 16 and this is my first car.
I'd just recommend making sure you take it to a place that works with gears and differentials often. They are a pretty tricky install, from what i've heard...

I've seen and heard this many times about not having to worry about the gear install with the newtakeoff rear end; however, didn't somebody there have to install the gears? That rear end didn't come from the factory with 4:10s in it. Do they ever screw up the gear install? Just wondering.

They claim that they are factory installs but I don't see how that is possible..

When ordering a car new, (before it is built) I am prty sure you can specify whatever gear you want (as long as it is available from the factory) Even still, if it is a after factory gear, I am sure that the guys at newtakeoff know what's up. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with one of their rear ends. And BTW A7X1031, if you get another quote of 1000 bucks to install a ring/pinion and posi, then ask for a job there, cuz they have a racket and are makin boucoup bucks. I live near Seattle, and Randy's Ring and Pinion is just down the street. Guys send their rear ends from around the country for them to set up. They quoted me $350 install costs (that is if I supplied the ring/pinion/+posi) I can get gears for around $200 and a posi for the same. That puts the 4.10 posi 7.5 rear end at around $750. You are looking at 1000 + shipping for the takeoff with 4.10's. (shipping comes to about $150-200 for me) probably the same in most places. Sooooo it can be a considerable savings for a guy not planning on going crazy with the motor. I am seriously considering going that route, even if I supercharge, because I know that I will only test the strength of the rear end like 3 or 4 times a year at the track, so in daily driving situations, I won't even come close to putting enough stress on it to make it fail. I'ts nice to know you have bulletproof parts (I.E. the 8.8), but most of us never need them even when we buy them.
