2008 Mustang V6 to V8 upgrade with Automatic to Manual Transmission Switch
I have a 2008 Mustang V6 and am looking to swap the engine for a GT V8. Along with the engine switch i am looking to swap the automatic transmission for a manual one. I have a few questions concerning the transmission swap.
What all parts do I need for the swap (ie, transmission, shifter, pedal, flywheel, clutch, etc)
Is there a place where I can find a complete manual transmission (ie, savalge yard, donor car, etc)
One question about the engine swap, i also want to add a roush supercharger to the GT engine, what modifications to the chassis do I need to make to handle the increased weight and horsepower?
Any useful advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Dude, unless you were GIVEN the v6 car, or the engine in it is shot..... your best bet is to start with the GT anyway. They can be gotten for way less than 20k right now, and you will be into your conversion (with the cost of the car+engine+trans+labor+needed conversion parts...) probably close to the exact same as if you just went out and bought a gently used 05,or 06 GT. I have even seen GT's for 16k depending on how many miles they have. You probably can't do you conversion for less than that (again including the cost of EVERYTHING) Not tryin to discourage you, but it isn't like the old days when you could just pull a motor and bolt a new one in its place and not have any worries.
With that said, if the car was free to you, and you have 10k laying around..... I say go for it.
Or....... buy a supercharger for your v6 and you will have GT like performance. The cost of the supercharger, ready to bolt on, will likely be close to doing the drivetrain swap, and the power of the supercharged 6 will be equal if not better than the stock v8 drivetrain. You won't be able to go much higher than that, but if you wanted a 600hp beast, you shouldn't have started with the 6 to begin with. Best of luck.
yea I agree, and with a car that new, you can just sell it and pay a little more for the GT. If you look on craigs list, you can find an 05 GT with low miles between 14-15k

My friend did this to his 06 v6. He found the motor and trans. on E bay, then he had to buy the rear from diversified, then he had to change the exhaust etc.etc. He spent way too much for the conversion. He said if he had to do it again he would have just traded it in on a GT.
Your in over you head in this situation. If you were gonna spend that much money, and you really wanted to keep the sixer, drop in a 5.4l cobra engine.

Just about the only way I see this as a good option, is if the car was a "gimme" and the engine and tranny (and hopefully rear end) were nearly gimmies too. That way, after you have spent the small fortune it would take to do the swap, you will still have some equity in the car. If you are a master mechanic with your own shop, and have acces to a wholesale GT drivetrain, and lots of time and patience, it could be done. But buying a GT for 15thousand can be done as well, sooooo Why were you thinking of doing this again? Sell your 6 for what it is worth, and hopefully get out from under it, and buy the least expensive GT you can find. Heck, if you aren't ever planning of selling it, buy a "salvaged" GT for less than what you paid for your 6, then mod the snot out of it and make it a beast. Most salvages today are pretty good cars. It doesn't take much to total a new car these days. Dent 3 fenders and deploy the airbags and you are pretty much totaled.
