Hello, i have a new v6 and am looking to modify it. A few people i have heard from say that before anything i should get a new rear end from newtakeoff, the 8.8. Then again i have heard from a few people that the 7.5 rear ends are stronger than they are given credit for. Eventually i will be around 400 horses can the 7.5 handle this? And would it be worth it to just go with new gears and a t lok for a year or so while a save up for a supercharger or turbo?
General rule of thumb is about 350 rwhp. The new rear end is definitely not the first thing to be done. A cai, tune, and exhaust make a nice difference. If your planning on 400 hp it might be a good idea to install a complete kit(gears, tlok, 8.8) instead of just new gears and tlok. If you install the whole kit the installation is easier and cheaper too.

The installation is cheaper, but with parts you'd be cheaper with new gears/tlock on the 7.5".
There are plenty of blown guys out there making 300 or more at the wheels on the 7.5" rear with no problems. Of course, there is always the occasional fluke rear that will give up lower than that and unless you're the original owner of your car you don't know what it's been through before you bought it.
Agreed with the general rule; 350 should be the max for the 7.5". No more than 300rwhp on the 7.5" if you're going to be running drag radials.

I am the original owner so i know whats been done to the car. I already have CAI, dual catbacks, and tune. So you guys think a t lok and gears would be ok on a 7.5. Do you know if that voids any warranties.?

I meant abuse-wise rather than mod-wise.
You just never know how many times the guy before you dumped the clutch at 4000 RPM's. Especially with a mustang.

If you are planning on putting out 400 hp, I would say get the 8.8 with the gears and t-lok right away. Why pay for the install of gears and t-lok just to swap in a new rear end once you put a blower on?
Sure, the 7.5 may be able to handle that much power, but if you are putting that much money into your stang, why take the chance? IMO, I think its best to put out more money right away so you don't end up paying a bunch down the road.
Hope this helps...

buying the 8.8 with loc and gears already installed + installation vs. installation of gears and lock youself yields only about 300+ or - difference, gettin the 8.8 being more expensive. if you just get the 8.8 for that extra mulah you get no worries, good piece of mind, and more potential for extra gains later on down the road. cmon, you and i both know you will never stop adding power and other mods to your stang, even with that much power. im goin with the 8.8 just for the reasons i listed too, seems like a wise choice in my mind.

True, its likely that none of us will ever really kill the mod bug.
But at the same time, the likelihood of any given person (myself included) of going f/i or dropping in a 331 is so small that the 8.8" rear is unnecessary. As for me, i'll probably stick to bolt-ons and other small stuff I can do in my garage, which will make the stang fast but not powerful enough to break a 7.5".
Save that $300 and put it towards an aluminum drive-shaft; you'll increase your power even more and won't be putting more strain on the rear.

i agree 100% for myself. everyone is different, and so are pocket books. i`m not worried about my v6 having 400 hp. i can put a posi in it for 199.00,,,and maybe throw in a 355 gear set for 250.00 more. and have a fun car to drive anywhere i want. that other 1000.00 could buy a bunch of fun stuff
