Default FRPP dual exhaust banging noise...

I had the FRPP dual exhaust system installed on my 07 v6 a few months ago. Whenever I hit a bump/pothole I notice a very distinct metallic banging noise from either one or both of the pipes somewhere along the system, depending on the angle and speed at which I encounter the bump or pothole. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

The system otherwise sounds great--some noticeable drone at 1500RPM's (50-55mph) which I can reduce by turning off the O/D or turning up the music--a nice exhaust that looks good and seems to have upped the HP a bit, too. The banging noise is getting on my nerves, tho. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

it could be they forgot to put the slide off the pipe into a hanger.... or what happened to my 5.0 was the hanger to the tilpipe got a little bent and bumped against this little piece of metal...a piece of tape fixed that irritation. just get under there and check it all out.

Take it back to the installer and havem check it out the should do it cheap if not free just ask them nice. If you installed it your self just double check your work and don't be afraid to grab it and wiggle it every way you can and see if you can get it to hit somethin.

to check it yourself, you`ll have to jack it up enough to get under there, do a good visual check of the system to see if anything looks out of place or close to or touching anything. then grab the pipes and mufflers and do the the wiggle and jiggle test, then there is allways the tap around with the rubber mallet test. put a wrench on the all the clamps to make sure they are tight. you should be able to locate the problem.

I had the same problem after the Ford dealer installed my FRPP duals. It would sound banging two pots together in the kitchen. The problem I had is that I could not recreate the sound. I could hit a bump and hear it, and then drive over that same bump at the same speed ten more times without it happening again. It was really random.

One afternoon I stopped off at a nearby muffler shop and asked the guy to take a look at it. He put it on the rack, banged around under there for about 10 minutes or so, and told me I was good to go. He said that he re-positioned one of the hangers. He didn't charge me anything but I gave him $10, which I'm sure he just stuck in his pocket. Anyway, the banging sound is gone.

As for the droning at 1500 rpms, that's the one thing I don't like about these mufflers. Around town stop and go driving is where it really bothers me because I am constantly going in and out of that rpm range. I have ordered a set of GT take-off mufflers that I'm going to try. Folks say they are quieter so perhaps even if the droning is there, it won't be so noticeable.

Check the clearance of the overaxle pipes and the panhard brace, spare tire well, and differential housing...

I have the same issue with my Macs, i can hear banging when i hit the bumps sometimes. Could it be because i used 1 hanger for the driver side muffler instead of 2?

i had the same problem from my magnaflow kit. the area that was hitting was the overaxle pipe on the spare tire well. thats one of the problems when the mufflers get relocated on systems that use glass packed mufflers.

Thanks for all the great feedback, folks! I appreciate your sharing your ideas as well as your similar experiences. I've got jackstands--now I gotta wait for a fairly warm winter day to get under there and start banging around! Thanks again for your help.

OK, replaced the Bullitt mufflers with GT take-offs. At first I really wasn't sure that there was that much difference but then I realized that I was hearing some squeaks (convertible) that I haven't been hearing, so definitely a little quieter in the sub 2000 rpm range. Above 2000 rpm I can't really tell any difference. I'll drive it awhile before letting go of the Bullitts.

A rubber mallet will help you narrow things down..
