I have always used downshifting for slowing down, try not to be too hard on the car though.
Yesterday coming off the interstate downshifting thru gears I was a little more aggressive than usual and hit around 4200 or maybe a bit more on the third to second gear shift.
Got to thinking about it and wondering is that harmful to the motor or rest of driveline. I know in theory it surely would be, but in reality how bad is it really ?
I know the netural rev limiter is set low to keep neutral RPMs from being too high when motor is not under load. Is the high RPM downshifting the same as not being under load ?
How high do RPMS hit for the rest of you guys with manual tranny's when downshifting ?
I was under the impression that as long as you didn't over-rev the engine, you would be okay. I think the V6 rev limiter is set at 5500 right? Then again i have a GT auto so i am not much help

Lol, I don't think I've ever downshifted in my mustang...seriously lol.. not once! , I always just shift into neutral and let it float...

Wait, is there a rev limiter? I have a tune on my car, that didn't remove it did it? I like to have one...

Thats why you bought a Manual, at least thats why I did. I love down shifting in and out and around corners. Whether you are popping the clutch or the opposite of popping the clutch for downshifts you are working the clutch harder and shortening lifespan. Everytime you start the engine you are causing some wear and tear damage to the engine internals. The engine is definetly under load during downshifts, I guess it could be a negitive load as opposed to a positive load , but there is definetly a load. As for what RPM's I use when downshifting? Whatever it takes! 4-5000 rpm's is a big downshift, but these cars are serious fun in that RPM range. It may not be the best thing for the car, but it always makes my heart feel good.

you didnt do any damage, think about it, people run their cars down the track week after week and they go past the rpm range you mentioned and they dont break, sure some cars do eventually but it could be the way the driver shifts or it could be poor installation, bad conditions, etc.
In short... your cars fine

Well your tuner can remove the rev limiter or adjust it to a different setting. Its probably smart to keep a rev limiter, you can always forget to shift for one reason or another. You can check on your tuner to see what the rev limit is by going through the options for the tune.

adding to it everyday
I down shift to slow down all the time, but I usually only get the rpms up to 2500 to 3000. The only thing I know that it will put more wear and tear on is the clutch, but it is a trade off since you put less wear on the breaks.

I doubt if your who ever tuned your mustang would have removed the rev limiter. You can change the rev limiter with your tuner. I haven't hit the limiter yet, but it is nice to know it is there just in case.

The item that takes the most stress potentially are the springs in your clutch pressure plate so take it easy on them. It helps if you have lightened the drive line with a aluminum flywheel so your engine revs faster when you blip the throttle to more closely match flywheel-pressure plates speeds. My stock driveline does not respond fast enough for my tastes due to the heavy stock flywheel. It ( the driveline weight) also accounts for too much horsepower driveline loss that I would rather have going to my rear wheels.
