Post What is the difference between the 7.5 and 8.8 rear ends?

What is the difference between a 7.5 and 8.8 both mechanically and performance wise? I am falling into some money and am buying 3.73's/t lock cai/tuner and exhaust. Where should I shop for the gears and t lock and also in your opinions which is better ... Bama or Bren (for tune files)

From what I understand, 7.5 is in V6 and 8.8 is in GTs. The Mechanical difference is that the 8.8 is thicker than 7.5 and performance: 8.8 can withstand more power.

Thank you, appreciate that explanation. You have any opinions on where to shop for the parts?

if youre getting the gears and t loc you might as well get it already assembled and ready to instal, get an 8.8 take off. if you weigh out the cost of both with instalation included youre only spending about 300$ more on the 8.8. its stronger and will withstand more punishment and you could probably almost instal it yourself, and save some money.

Both tuners have great experience although Brenspeed cost a lot more than Bama. i prefer Tillman they are known for doing deals and giving discounts.

Did I mention Tillman Speed.

go with bama. great tunes great customer service.

the 8.8 is usually if you plan on going forced injection in the future. If your going to put on a turbo or super charger than i would say get the 8.8, if not stick with the 7.5 because you'll save a few hundred dollars.

I was in the same boat as you several months ago, and had the same decision to make. Build my 7.5 or buy a 8.8 alleready done. As far as cost goes, again, like some have mentioned before- you are looking at about 500 for the gears and posi (together) and another 300-400 for the install. OK, so you have between $800 and $900 invested in....... a 7.5 rear end now. I bought a 8.8 with 4.10's and a posi for $900 shipped to my door. Because there isn't any real know-how for the complete axle install required, I was able to install it myself, seriously, it wasn't difficult at all. getting the brakes put back on was the hardest part, but the whole process took me about 4 hours. I say look for the same deal I and many of us have gotten, and get a 8.8 and install it yourself.

A little green dude once said "there is no try, just do, no try" (or something to that effect. Money well saved for very little effort, is installing your own axle. Even someone who has never picked up a wrench before could feasably do this mod themself.

Thanks, very helpful info! Where are you finding these pre-assembled rear ends?

I and another user here on this site (dewness) got ours from a guy who is a vendor here, he goes by the name of ModularMuscle, and runs a tuning shop in Arizona. Drop him a PM and see if he still has any rear ends at that price. Otherwise, just look around. Deals come up. He wasn't the only one offering them for $900 at the time (and that is for the 4.10 ones, the 3.73 ones are sometimes a bit cheaper) just search the chat boards here and on some of the other mustang sites (yes, there ARE other forums) just none as COOL as this one One of the other deals I found, I found on the 4.0collective. Happy shopping. If you are in for a "quick fix" you can allways go with newtakeoffs.com, but you will pay a premium, last I checked they were getting around $1000 for theirs PLUS shipping, but if you installed it yourself , it would still be close to a wash.
