Gas gauge stuck, but low fuel light works properly. 2005 Mustang V6
I just bought an '05 Mustang convertible and noticed a problem. The gas gauge has shown 1/4 tank since the day I bought it and hasn't moved at all. The low fuel light came on after I'd been driving a couple of days, so I filled the tank, but the gas gauge still shows 1/4 tank. (The low fuel light went out after gassing up.)
The rest of the gauges are working fine. I don't know if it's a wire, fuse, or the sending unit that's not working (or maybe something else). Any suggestions on what might be wrong? Thanks!
No, I bought it used and it has 41,000 miles, so not under warranty. I bought it at a non-Ford dealership and they won't fix it without charge even though it's obvious it was broken when I bought it. I'll file a complaint about them, but in the meantime I need to get it fixed.
Does the fact that the low fuel light still works mean that the sending unit might be okay, or are they unrelated?
Thanks for responses. This is my first Mustang and I just joined the forum here. I'm looking forward to particpating.

Good point. If the light is working, then the sending unit (and therefore the float) must be working. Might just be the gauge. You could try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes to see if it resets.
I went around some circles too fast one time and the gauge went empty and showed less 50 miles left.It got ok after filling the tank,so the gauge and warning work together with the float.I would suspect the gauge also.Good luck.

Okay, I looked in the manual and there's a procedure to go through for the engine to "relearn" its idle and fuel trim strategy after a battery has been disconnected, so I'll need to wait a bit until I have time to follow the procedure.
Also, if I remember right, I should remove the negative battery terminal first, then the positive. then when I reconnect, I should reattach the positive terminal first, then the negative. Am I wrong?
Thanks to you all for your help!

You really only need to remove the negative. Just follow the relearn procedures in the manual and you'll be fine.
Okay, I plan on trying it Sunday. (Health problems have slowed me down.) Hopefully, the battery thing will clear it up. If not, well then I'm not sure how to proceed.
What you could try is adding a bottle of "Techron" fuel system cleaner to your tank. I had that problem once and so did my dad and the dealership told us that they just put in a bottle of techron to fix the problem. Try to run a bottle made for 20 gallons through. And try to do it every 5,000 miles to keep your car running great.

Had a similar problem. Did a burn out and is said I had like 11 miles till zero. Filled her up and all is fine.
I should check up on the procedure.

The 2005 Mustang is known for having fuel guage problems. Ford has issued two technical service bulletins (TSB) regarding erratic fuel guage operation. You can go to the NHTSA website and check out the bulletins there. It just gives you a very brief summary. Write down the TSB numbers and contact your local Ford dealer. Give them the TSB numbers and they will look them up and give you details of the problem and the fix for it. You will then be in a better position to know if the TSB's are specific to your problem or not.
