For those that have installed 4.10's, are you happy with them? Every time you hop on the highway do you crank your music up and wish you installed 3.73's? Just wanted some input for my mustang on which gears to install. I am just afraid i will install 3.73 or 4.10's and regret it!
At 70 mph I'm at slightly less than 2500 rpm's, not bad at all..... go with the 4.10's, depending on the year of your car, you more than likely have 3.31's. It will be a vast improvement in acceleration. You will not regret it the first time you stomp on the go pedal!! Make sure whoever does your install KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING!!! Good luck with your decision!
yea make sure they know what there doing and its a shop that will do it again for nothing if there is any noise or other complications. As for the gear choice 4.10 or maybe 3.90's will be good for your 6.

My personal choice would be the 3:73 gears. Not as much wear on your engine.Don't loose as much hwy mpg as the 4:10.If you do very much hwy driving the 3:73 is just fine.More city driving, then you could go with the 4:10.I'm talking about an auto trans. You didn't mention whether you have auto or manual in your car.Hope this helps.

Wouldn't it make sense that gears would make it easier on your engine? Since it doesn't take as much power to get the RPMs up. Gears do not add power to your car (actually might lose a tiny bit), am I making any sense? Anyway, I just got my 8.8 with 4.10s installed and I have no trouble at all on the highway. I am still breaking them in and havent stomped down completely on them but I can tell my car is such more of a beast now!

I think it's more driving at higher rpm in general that causes more engine wear. You've got all the moving parts moving more than before, thus more wear. Because the 4.10 gears would make your rpm higher at the same speed than the stock gears, you'd have more engine wear driving at the same speed.

thanks for the input guys! I have an automatic, and I do drive on the highway every week (about a 150 mile each way trip that i make once a week). I was thinking about 4.10's with my automatic since that seems to be the norm. Thanks again,
John

Dude, when I hop on the highway, I crank up the music REGARDLESS of what gear I have! but my exhaust actually is quieter at 2250 rpm cruizin at 60 than it was at about 1800-2000 rpm with the stock gears. In fact, prior to installing the gears, I used to frequently take it out of overdrive at 60mph BECAUSE of the exhaust note at that low rpm.
and the difference in the pull is un-believable. You will kick your own arse for not doing it sooner, once you step on the gas for the first time. No regretes here, like I said once before, I wish they came from the factory this way!
