Default GT muffler take-off rattle

I just put a GT take-off muffler on my wife's 2008 V6 mustang. Everthing seemed to working fine but over the weekend it has developed a rattle. I have checked the brackets and everything is tight. There is a 3rd hanger that came standard on the v6 muffler. It is welded to the tip. Do I need to add this to the GT muffler to stop the rattle?

if everything is tight and theres not much movement then make sure that it isnt rubbing against anything. maybe the tip's hitting the bumper?

There is plenty of clearance at the bumper. It sounds more like metal on metal. I got under there today at work but didn't have time to look at it to much...When I pulled down hard on the muffler it stopped for a second but then started back up. But I can say it is definitely not hitting the bumper.

Check the hangers on the muffler when warm. They will expand and sometimes come in contact with the rear of the bumper.

no, you dont need that 3rd bar and hanger off the v6 muff. i`m with stl, thinking it might be the hanger rod that comes through the rubber hanger might be positioned farther back and hitting something. only other thing it could be is the muffler clamp( where it bolts on the over axle) or a loose bolt holding the rubber muffler hangers to the frame, or very rare that its inside the muffler( which would be a rubber mallet test or shake test

That 3rd hanger-like thing is a vibration dampener.

the v6 muffler actually has 3 hangers plus the vibration damper. i have a pic of one, but not here at work. the v6 muffler was mounted way better than the gt`s are.

When I first got my car, the stock exhaust made a rattling sound, and I had to get it replaced under warranty. Maybe there is something inside that came loose? Maybe welding the dampener from the stock muffler to the gt muffler would help it?

Thanks for everyone's help. Last night I took the muffler off, heated up the hangers and bent them up about 1/4 an inch to give it a litte more clearance under the bumber, re-mounted it, tightend the crap out of all the bolts and she seems to be purrin' like a kitten now! Thanks again!

glad that worked out for you. I had to have 2 brackets welded to the pipe before the muffler to stop the ratteling when i hit a bump.

I am having the same problem, it happens a lot when going up hills, at low RPMs, and it is really annoying. I am going to have a look at the hangers tonight. I really like this muffler, in my opinion it's better than the Flowmaster, but damn that vibration is annoying.

Do you have a rattle or a low droan sound? I don't think there is any way around a little vibration at low RPM's (maybe with a tune), but you should not hear a rattle at any RPM.

I took a closer look at my hangers and they were a little loose. Silly oversight of mine.
