yea, i guess it does sound kind of weird. i think that's how slap sticks work though right? or maybe they just downshift for you. i dunno, i have 0 experience with em.

This is interesting. I have a buddy who has a '98 automatic GT 'vert. I'll have to con him into coming over and letting me take his car for a spin and i'll see if that generation does it too.
Might even have to go down to the dealership and check out the 2010 to see what it does.

hmm, thats very interesting, i have a auto so i will try this for myself. I actually already used 3rd, 2nd gear and thought it went through 1st and 2nd when i too of in 3rd, maybe i should pay more attention.
Thing i found out is if your in D and change to 3rd, it doesnt engage gears correctly, so you have to turn od off to make it go from 5th to 4th and with od off put it in 3rd, according to my dealer going straight from D od on will bypass 4th so it makes sense.
Anyway i'll try the 3rd 2nd gear only to see what happens

Unless Of Course Your Racing.....Then Take The OD Off Cause It Will Just Throw You Into A Crusing Gear To Save Gas Etc...And Then You Will Be In A Cruising Gear As You Pass The Finish Instead Of Pulling Hard IN Forth Or Something...If YOu Just Cruising About Then Leave It On. When I Wnet To The Track Last I Did A Few Passes With it On And Ran Low 15s....With It Off......14.973 Thats With Shifting The Tranny, Launching IN First And Shifting At 5g Etc Etc.
And automatics are supposed to be the 'easy' transmission.
Think of 1-2-3-D and OD as 'gear enablers.' Putting your car in 1 enables the transmission to use 1st gear. Putting it in 2 enables it to use 1st and 2nd. In 3 it will be able to use 1st, 2nd and 3rd and in D it will be able to use 1st through 4th gear as it sees fit.
Turning overdrive on 'enables' it to shift into 5th gear, increasing highway fuel economy. Turning it off keeps the transmission from going any higher than 4th.
O/D off doesn't actually give you more horsepower, it just enables 5th gear to be used. Lots of guys will tell you that they feel more pull with O/D off, but its all mojo.
no when you have it in 2 it only uses second gear. when its in 3 it can only use 3rd gear. if you put it in d it can use 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Understanding the gearshift positions of the 5speed automatic transmission
Understanding the gearshift positions of the 5speed automatic transmission(From the owners manual)
This vehicle is equipped with an adaptive Transmission Shift Strategy.
Adaptive Shift Strategy offers the optimal transmission operation and
shift quality. When the vehicles battery has been disconnected for any type of service or repair, the transmission will need to relearn the normal shift strategy parameters, much like having to reset your radio stations when your vehicle battery has been disconnected. The Adaptive Transmission Strategy allows the transmission to relearn these operating parameters. This learning process could take several transmission upshifts and downshifts; during this learning process, slightly firmer shifts may occur. After this learning process, normal shift feel and shift scheduling will resume. P (Park)
This position locks the transmission and prevents the rear wheels from turning.
To put your vehicle in gear:
Start the engine
Depress the brake pedal
Move the gearshift lever into the desired gear Driving
To put your vehicle in P (Park):
Come to a complete stop
Move the gearshift lever and securely latch it in P (Park)
Always set the parking brake fully and make sure the gearshift is
latched in P (Park). Turn the ignition to the LOCK position and
remove the key whenever you leave your vehicle. R (Reverse)
With the gearshift lever in R (Reverse), the vehicle will move backward.
Always come to a complete stop before shifting into and out of R (Reverse). N (Neutral)
With the gearshift lever in N (Neutral), the vehicle can be started and is free to roll. Hold the brake pedal down while in this position. D (Drive) with Overdrive
The normal driving position for the best fuel economy. Transmission
operates in gears one through five. D (Drive) without Overdrive
D (Drive) with Overdrive can be deactivated by pressing the
transmission control switch on the right side of the shift handle.
This position allows for all forward gears except Overdrive.
O/D OFF lamp is illuminated.
Provides engine braking.
Use when driving conditions cause excessive shifting from O/D to
other gears. Examples: city traffic, hilly terrain, heavy loads, trailer
towing and when engine braking is required.
To return to Overdrive mode, press the transmission control switch.
The O/D OFF lamp will not be illuminated.
O/D OFF Driving
Overdrive mode is automatically returned each time the key is turned off. 3 (Third)
This position allows for third gear only.
Provides engine braking.
To return to D (Drive) without Overdrive, move the transmission shift lever into the D (Drive) position.
Selecting 3 (Third) at higher speeds will cause the transmission to
downshift to third gear at the appropriate vehicle speed. 2 (Second)This position allows for second gear only.
Provides engine braking.
Use to start-up on slippery roads.
To return to D (Drive) without Overdrive or 3 (Third), move the
transmission shift lever into the D (Drive) or 3 (Third) position.
Selecting 2 (Second) at higher speeds will cause the transmission to downshift to second gear at the appropriate vehicle speed. 1 (First) This position allows for first gear only.
Provides maximum engine braking.
Will not downshift into first gear at high speeds; will cause the
transmission to downshift to a lower gear, then allows for first gear
when the vehicle reaches slower speeds.
Forced downshifts
Allowed in Overdrive or Drive.
Depress the accelerator to the floor.
Allows transmission to select an appropriate gear.

If you turn the OD off, then you will achieve higher RPM's, which will give you more of your available horsepower to work with while you drive. The higher the RPM, the closer you are to using all available horsepower, until it reaches the maximum RPM as engineered by the Ford engineers for your car.
I, also, have a 2000 Nissan P/U that is a "MAJOR WEAKLING" in Overdrive, but once I take it out of OD, the RPM's go up, and it uses all 143 horses so that I can stay up with the traffic. It takes all day for my truck to get to highway speeds using 4th gear OD, but taking the OD off gives it the ability to stay with traffic, and keep moving. I bought my Mustang because I was tired of a 4 cylinder "weakling", and have not regretted it one bit.
My Mustang, in my opinion "ZOOMS", in daily driving, having to run at 80 mph on the highway, most days, to keep up with traffic, and it is as smooth as silk, even with OD on.
By the way the O/D off light comes on on my truck, and my miles per gallon suffers, but I DON'T CARE, I want to keep up with the traffic, and get to where I am going, at any time, as soon as possible.
Hey guys, I have a 06 v6 with the auto trans and when i turn over drive off it changes my ratio even in the lower gears. does that sound right?
I was always under the impression that O/D should not change anything until after 4th gear but if that were true I should not notice an rpm difference switching O/D off when i'm in 2nd or 3rd gear.
