Default enigma of the Overdrive switch...

i understand the concept for a overdrive.
saves gas on long trips right?
and i understand most people leave it on, cause the rpm's are less while in drive.

so, what i wondering is,, does switching the overdrive off, actully give you a few pony's ?

does switching it off, give you a better launch?

someone please explain ?

od is a gear ratio, think of it as the " efficent" button

in D ( 4th ) for every 1000, RPMS in to the trans 1000 come out

in 5th ( OD ) for every 1000 go in 1300 come out, ( not real numbers but you get the idea )

5th gear is for speeds over 45 usually.

in town leave OD off.

highway or back country turn it on

it dont add any hp its just a controlled gear.

but since it lowers RPMS, instead of being in D at 55 MPH at 3000 rpm ( example not real number )

OD will get you that same speed, more efficently at 2000 RPMS thus less rpms mean you save gas and get the same amount

And automatics are supposed to be the 'easy' transmission.

Think of 1-2-3-D and OD as 'gear enablers.' Putting your car in 1 enables the transmission to use 1st gear. Putting it in 2 enables it to use 1st and 2nd. In 3 it will be able to use 1st, 2nd and 3rd and in D it will be able to use 1st through 4th gear as it sees fit.

Turning overdrive on 'enables' it to shift into 5th gear, increasing highway fuel economy. Turning it off keeps the transmission from going any higher than 4th.

O/D off doesn't actually give you more horsepower, it just enables 5th gear to be used. Lots of guys will tell you that they feel more pull with O/D off, but its all mojo.

I hate to do this because black 05 pony has helped me out on a few things, but,on the Auto's,when in 1 you can only use 1st gear,in 2 you can only use 2nd gear, not 2nd and 1st,when in 3 you only use 3rd gear, not 2nd and 1st also.Thought I'd mention this for gunslinger.I can't really tell if the RPM'S go up faster with O/D on or off.

no black 05 was right

when ur in 1 you use 1

when ur in 2 you use 1 and 2

3 rd 1 2 and 3 ect

its all about where your at

if your at a dead stop, and put it in 2, you will only shift gears one time

if stopped and 3, youll shift 2 times

drive 3 times

od 4 times

im driving a auto, so, with all that said,, it seems silly to even turn OD off, when you get the same pull with lower rpm's

OK 05 Horse,I like you too and you are very helpful with everyone including me.But,look on page 160 of owners manual.I looked just to make sure but I already knew the ford auto's were 1 for 1st only,2 for 2nd only, like driving on ice, etc, and 3 for 3rd is only 3rd gear not 2nd and 1st.Even drove the mustang down the street,in 2 stayed in second, did not downshift to 1st when I came to a stop.Stayed in 2nd when I took off, same as in 3rd no downshift to 2nd,1st.05,did you by-pass your TB?

no i assume they did it for a reason. i may route it to an additinal oil cooler.

if you put it in 3, and it stays there, your car would have to take off in 3rd gear is what your saying. its gott abuild up, but once it gets there it will stay there and not shift higher.

i just checked mine
sure enough it says that gear only. but i think its just jumbled words an AOD has to start in first for the fluid pressures to engage second.

but what it means is at top out, it will top out in that gear.... i gotta say reading about tha auto tranny in my book... theres some cool stuff like if your doing 60 and shift to 3rd it wont do it till u get down to it...or mash the gas lol!

but i dunno

i know on every AOD i drive it builds up.

cant jsut start in second...but i got a manual... so it dont bother me!

haha, keith you are wrong. if you have an auto, and you put it in 3rd at a stoplight light, it bogs down when you press on the gas, its just like a manual if you use gears 1-3 on an automatic, just you dont have to use a clutch

That's the first i've ever heard of an automatic transmission working like that...

Pretty strange way of working if you ask me, but it does give you better control over the gears.

the od is your 5th gear basically. it lowers rpms from 4th to save fuel, but in some occasions it drains fuel. if i'm racing, or i'm going to floor it from a roll, ill turn mine off. it gives you about 300rpms more by dropping a gear...from 5th to 4th, and allows you to climb that rpm range faster, untill you get to the top of 4th, where you have to manually change into 5th if you had it turned off. i think it even adds a few more rpms to your redline and sweetens the shift point. next time you're out, try it. go from a roll say 20...smash it with the od on, then do it with the od off. also for me, ive found that on a 40mph roll if you smash it, its really touchy and sends you back in the seat in a hurry, you'll be at 60+ in no time. at least in my car.
