imo, its not a waste of money. you'll end up paying close to the same for gears, lock and installation just to beef up your 7.5. it really depends on what kind of power youre looking to make. the 7.5 will handle most everything up to 300-350hp and in some cases even more hp. just to be on the safe side, an 8.8 takeoff will be a lot stronger, so you wont have to worry with and big motor mods while only costing $200+ or - more. if youre simply going for bolt on mods,computer tune, and a tame turbo or s/c(no more than 10lbs), the stock 7.5 is just fine. now the differenct gear ratios are a different story. they dont increase hp, but they make it more efficient for your car to deliver the power in any way you want. general rule of thumb...3:73s are perferred in s/c and t/c applications and dont hurt your fuel mileage too bad. 4:10s are for accelleration and beating GT's with just bolt ons...also some s/c and t/c guys are running 4:10s and like em, but fuel mileage goes way down with them. hope that helps
