Default 2008 Mustang V6-axle question

I have an 08 ford mustang v6, and I have been told that in order to increase the hp on it I would need to swap out the rear axle for a 8.8 rear axle, but then I was told that I don't have to replace the whole axle just the rear gear and pinion from the stock v6 ones to the 8.8 ones, I would like to know if it is true so that I don't have to waist money on a new rear axle. Thank you

your stock 7.5 is good to over 350HP

if ur gonna TC or SC id go 8.8 if not 7.5 is ample enough

You can't install an 8.8 ring and pinion in your 7.5. You'd need to swap the rear.

imo, its not a waste of money. you'll end up paying close to the same for gears, lock and installation just to beef up your 7.5. it really depends on what kind of power youre looking to make. the 7.5 will handle most everything up to 300-350hp and in some cases even more hp. just to be on the safe side, an 8.8 takeoff will be a lot stronger, so you wont have to worry with and big motor mods while only costing $200+ or - more. if youre simply going for bolt on mods, computer tune, and a tame turbo or s/c(no more than 10lbs), the stock 7.5 is just fine. now the differenct gear ratios are a different story. they dont increase hp, but they make it more efficient for your car to deliver the power in any way you want. general rule of thumb...3:73s are perferred in s/c and t/c applications and dont hurt your fuel mileage too bad. 4:10s are for accelleration and beating GT's with just bolt ons...also some s/c and t/c guys are running 4:10s and like em, but fuel mileage goes way down with them. hope that helps
