my friend has a 2001-2004 mustang v6 with manual tranny. i have a 2007 mustang v6 with auto tranny. we both have a cold air intake and straight pipe true dual exhaust. he wants to race me and claims his weight advantage along with manual tranny would help him win. what do you guys think?

mods to get over summer: 8.8 inch t-lok rearend, 3.73 gears, manual tranny swap(from new take off), under drive pully, maybe camshaft.
OR??? remanufactured 302 pushrod engine GO LONGHORNS
Maybe...
May be a close race, but...
Ya know, I'm just not sure on that one.
Funny thing is that a while back a somewhere between '99-'01 Mustang GT came rushing up behind me on the freeway and I didn't do anything at first, but as he started to pull back slightly I downshifted to third and dropped the hammer from 65-100, and by the time he reacted, he couldn't catch up until I came off the gas. That has been the only mustang from that generation that I have raced since so I'm still unsure if the 4.0 spins up as quick as the 16v 4.6...

He's 20 horsepower and 20 ft/lbs of torque behind you, especially since you've got a full exhaust which is a big improvement over the stock muffler which is very restrictive.
On the other hand he's 300 lbs. lighter than you are.
With a custom tune (which you really need for your intake to do anything anyway) you should romp all over him. Even without it you should still beat him. Stock for stock the 4.0's are supposed to be faster than all the previous v6 mustangs and all the GT's excluding the 99-04's.
I know for a fact we can beat the '98 GT's stock for stock because i've done it more than once vs. my friends '98 GT vert.

If he is really good at shifting, then I think it will be close, however I still think you will win.
I've raced a stock 04 GT, and beat him by about half a car length. Though I'm pretty sure the guy just does not know how to shift. It's not like I just got a lucky jump or anything, we raced three times. Same result each time.
But when my car was stock I raced another 05+ V6 that was stock and romped on it. I seem to have a little more power than any other V6 I've raced. I did buy my car used, so I'm thinking there might be something done to it that I don't know about. I thought the dealerships were supposed to remove anything like that but who knows.
I can GUARANTEE that you can beat him easily. The 4.0L SOHC engine is way better than 3.8L Pushrod. I've raced a 95 GT @ track and i was faster than him by millisecond, point is i still beat him and he was GT. So i say you can take a V6 no problem.
