Default Replace 17" over 16" wheels - S197 v6

I'm looking for new wheels to replace the 16" wheels on my S197 v6 (08) with 17" wheels... but I'm not familiar with the wheels yet still learning more...

Mine has P215/65R16 tires and 16x7 rims with 5 lugs... also has TCS on/off.

Want to replace 16" with 17" wheels... is that possible to do that and how?

Please fill me in with the how-to info, thanks!

Are you looking at factory wheels or aftermarket? There are few issues with factory wheels. You can pretty much put any wheel that is on one mustang, and put it on another (from one s197 to another) no matter what size.

As far as aftermarket wheels, check with the manufacturer for fittment. You can even put 18's or some people go with 20's, (I like 18, I think it is JUSSSSST right)

Also consider the speedometer error and TPS bands issue. Speedo will be most likely be off depending on wheel/tire size combination and you may need to get new TPS bands or live with the TPS light on all the time.

Tires account for the diameter so the speedometer is not an issue
like stated above, from a mustang to a mustang they'll work
when the Rim is larger, the tire ratio (second number) gets smaller
I think I have 255/45/18
I'm not 100% on the width as these came with the car

should be super easy to get on Craigslist and
find some stock GT 17" with good tires for under $400

here's a start

I replaced my 16s with 17s take offs and the tire size is so close that the speedometer is not off anymore than a mile or so , Look for tire and wheel combos from a number of places that offer take off tire and wheel combos

Also consider some of the sites that offer 17" wheels & tires combo from takeoff GT mustangs. The prices are very nice.

Default 18"

If you are going to replace the wheels, why not step up to 18"? Even 20" look good on these cars.

Thanks for your replies...

At first I thought mine had 17" but discovered that it has 16" so will plan to convert them with the 17" tires and wheels if doable yet you guys say it's doable... cool.

'09s v6 has 17" or wider but not on 08 v6 so that's where I must have misread back then somewhere. Still I will need to buy new tires someday so buy new wheels at the same time which will do mine better.

just to clarify.... 16, 17, 18, and 20 do NOT refer to the width of the wheel, they refer to the HEIGHT of the wheel. You said "17 or wider" in your quote, and I just want you to know, that a 17 in wide wheel (dont even think they make them) will NOT fit under a stock s197.

17 in tall wheels do, as do 18's and even 20's.

latr.

Yes! I then discovered about it online but thanks for pointing me about the 16" - 20" height, not width sizes.

So mine is 7" wide so I want 8" wide... should it be fine, right?

16x7 ---> 16x8

I would stick with 16" fine but just want bit wider is all.

You won't find any stock mustang rims in that size. I am sure there are aftermarket rims with that size combo, but if you want an 8 in wheel, get some GT takeoffs in either 17/8 or 18/8.5 that is your best bet

Yup, it is indeed tough to find 16x7 and 16x8 stock rims online!

Like you said that its easier to find plenty of 17x8 rims. I keep looking more yet have plenty of time for that. Too many kinds to choose which it's kind of tough for me to decide and choose which fits well into mine. lol Yet it's blessing we have Internet which makes it much easier to locate them than without.
