i posted this some in the talk section but the v6 guys need to check this out. i noticed at most a month ago the rubber ring from the crank pulley was looking tattered,( 1st pic) but yesterday it came apart.(2nd pic) if you run your car hard at all, better check your pulley. i was lucky and made it home but it would be a real bummer on the side of the road as it could cause some serious and dangerous problems and its not a easy fix. the pulley is so deep in the frt, most pullers dont work good and you need xtra long metric puller bolts for a pulley puller. i had better luck with a large 3 jaw puller. i scrolled through pages on ebay at rpm outlet. they have aftermarket pulleys but i didnt see one for the 4.0. stlwagon has a good link for ford parts if you have time to order and wait.129.00. i picked up a pulley at one dealer, 168.00 but had to go to another dealer to get the new bolt required for install,6.00. i failed to take a pic of the new pulley out of the box but it is pretty different.(3rd pic) the crank sensor gear is way different and the frt of the new one is completely covered with rubber so its gonna be harder to see its going bad. at least the new one 3" puller bolts will work to remove it. you`ll have to pull the cai, radiator top tank, powersteering tank, and the fan assembly out. the mechanic at the dealer said he has seen quite a few come in so it sounds pretty common( or more so with people who run their car harder, which i`m sure no one here does )

thats a great price stl, and if i would have been smarter, i would have posted about the pulley when i noticed it looking bad( when i took the pic) instead of waiting till it came apart. i could have had it changed before and saved a few bucks. i guess i was in denial that it was really coming apart on a low milage motor and just how fast it would fail.

It's possible your new one came with a rubber face specifically to protect the ring from drying out and decaying....perhaps the rest of us can follow the example by applying something to protect our good balancers.
well, i dont know. its the rubber inside the hub that goes bad. a few other guys have had the exact same problem. the new one does have a rubber coating over the entire face though. so you might be right about that and fords saw the problem and changed it. maybe its just the 05`s. ive run the car hard on occasions, combined with water and rust getting inside it, thats what did it in. i dont know what you could coat it with
old coot, right on. the lower thermo housing is like 53.00 and the top is 13.00. of course the bottom is what cracks

Hello, New here but i got a problem. My wifes mustang's cranshaft pulley is DUNN SON!. Does anyone know how much the stealership will charge to replace this part. I need to like asap , im thinkin of doing this myself. thank whom ever

i kinda touched on how to do it in the 1st post. the bolt is set back inside so far it was a pain to try to get off. have to come up with some spacers to go behind the puller. no idea what they charge to do it.

Thank you for replyin so quickly. can you tell me some more about whats in detail about the operation of removal an install of this part. Do you have to worry about timing it or the indicator? what of the crankshaft seal, did you replace that too? Did you use any special tools other than the puller? I bought a puller today but the bolts that are the proper thread are about 1/2 inch short, im think of going to Lowes and getting longer ones..your thoughts. (Please) I got a feeling that the dealer is going to charge me out the you know wat!!
This is not only a Mustang issue, I have a 2004 Sport Trac with the 4.0 and just had mine replaced at the dealership for $500, it seems this is a parts manufacturing issue and needs to be addressed by Ford. If I were a Ford top dog I would make the pulley manufacture pay for all the repairs, this makes Ford look bad to it's customers.
