Cool 2006 Mustang V6 upgrade help

Hi all,

New to the forums here. Lots of good info I've seen so far. Awesome site Coming from Toronto Canada.

Purchased a 2006 v6 Stang with the Pony Package hoping it would be a fun toy to upgrade. The stock performance is a little dull on these beauties, but they sure look awesome!

I'm certain buying a GT right off would give me better performance I know, but half the fun is doing as much as you can to a car and making it your own - and I nabbed this one with 50,000km (31K miles approx) with still 2 years and 50,000K warranty from the original purchase date and quite a steal!

So far I've slapped on the GT suspension bits front and rear but am looking for some suggestions. I don't want to go for a turbo kithttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adT...lass_10x10.gif or anything like that, but I'm positive with a bunch of simple mods combined I can take the lighter front end of this 6'er and get some better handling while outputting around what a GT does HP wise.

So far I'm eyeing -
'Screamin' Demon coil and Livewires and some new plugs
K&N cold air intake
Ford racing dual exhaust
Ford Racing t-lok and 3.73 gears

What further mods would you guys/gals recommend? There has got to be a way to get this v6 woken up a bit - it's a 4.0L for crying out loud

Also, I want to ask - should I go with a K&N CAI or perhaps this FOrd racing CAI with tuner? Is the F.Racing tuner a waste of money, or will it give the same results as any of the other aftermarket tuners? Is one safer than the other for a do-it-yourself'er?

welcome to the v6tech forum. i would get your exaust squared away 1st, then instead of that k&n, save up a little and get the cai/sct tuner/ custom tunes combo. that will wake that baby up

+1 on the exhaust go true duals with an h or x pipe headers and hi flow cats then avoid the k&n and go with a cold air intake like c&l or Jlt intakes and a sct tuner with a tillman or bama custome tune with your gears and coils and your mustang will be like a new car

if you are gunna go with a CAI and tuner combo, which would be the best to do, I would check out bamachips they are very experienced in tuning mustangs and offer some great deals (thats what I went with) getting new gears is a smart choice I am planning on getting some soon but if it is an auto I would go with 4.10 gears and if it is a manual then go with the 3.73 (4.10's you will feel more from than the 3.73's) Then the ford racing dual exhaust you should def. do I got them on my mustang and it is awesome really makes your mustang come to life and sound great! I would go with these mods first you will not be dissapointed.

Cool, thanks guys! I checked out the bama site in specific just now and their CAI and custom tuner with the 3 tunes it comes with seem like a much better option than what I had in mind previously

I'll do what you guys suggest then and grab the exhaust first and go from there then.

I think I'd like to stick with the Ford Racing dual exhaust unless you guys are have experience with something else that is much better... ? I'd guess just opening up the exhaust with even the FRacing set would be enough for the gains I'll see from the rest of the mods of course. I suppose the exhaust is just up to brand preference?

WELCOME!

A cai tuner combo should be your first mods. Wakes the car and you will need the tuner for future mods like gears. Just remember, never run a car with cai without a proper tune. And if you ask me, a cai what says it doesnt need a tune is not worth it.

As for the exhaust, performance diffrerence between single and dual is negligible, and the difference between various mufflers is as well. So when selecting your exhaust keep that in mind, and what you are selecting is the look and sound. Now dont get me wrong, the v6 stock muffler is terrible. All i am saying is a gt takeoff is greats sounding and cheaper. Spend your money wisely. A pipe is a pipe and there is no reason to overpay for it just because of the brand.

Gears are a good mod, but require a tune, keep that in mind. Also look into complete rear axles.

Shorty headers do barely anything, and so do throttle bodies.
A throttle body spacer is a great paperweight for the instructions that come with performance mods.

Coils, wires and plugs I have heard good things about.

I think that covers the essentials.

GOOD LUCK

yes on the exaust. ive been running just gt takeoff mufflers and have been very happy with them. you can run just the one if you dont want to go dual and it will really help. they are not real loud if thats what your looking for, but have a real nice sound. they will handle anything i`m gonna throw at them. about 90.00 for a set.

vlad, good advice

I had originally thought from my own sense of 'common sense' that while the stock muffler is probably a relative piece of garbage, that adding a CAI with tune should wake it up regardless of chanding pipes.

amustangrocks: I'm not looking to make it super loud, or really do much with the sound - it sounds alright already for what it is. A bit more low end growl never hurts though!

Perhaps I'll look more into a GT takeoff then. As well, I was looking into what it would cost to just grab a complete 8.8" rear axle assembly and throw it on vs. just having my 7.5" opened and throwing in the Tlok.

Lots of fun! Beginning to see though how guys aren't able to grab 280-300hp out of these 6'ers though without a blower - probably the only other thing you can really do then is to have some polishing done which may bring what, 30hp appox if well done?

Yeah the cai and tuner will wake the car up but a simple muffler replace will let the car breath better which is always nice. If you want more growl and not too loud then take of mufflers will be the perfect match. Not only does it free up some ponies and torque it give it a really nice growl. AND a set for two is around 80 bucks. Put one on now and the other later, that's what I did.

And I have heard several times that it is better to get a complete rear axle with gears and t-loc than to install them. Price wise and something about breaking in period.

Oh also consider looking into an aluminum driveshaft. It will let you safely drive beyond 120mph (speed limiter is set at 113mph which can be removed by the tuner).

And as I have said before, a good wash and wax does way more than a throttle body spacer.

lol so you're saying I should buy a new throttle body and spacer?

Any place you would recommend for buying the GT take offs? I'm assuming you keep the same pipe(s) and just weld on the new muffler then?

Oh no no welding required.

Check out craigslist or ebay. Maybe a dealership or a muffler shop but I am not sure. I got mine off ebay.
Here is a set I found real quick
2008 Ford Mustang GT Dual Exhaust Mufflers 05 06 07 08 :eBay Motors (item 200342249882 end time Aug-12-09 09:30:12 PDT)
And he ships to Canada.
There are also various sites that sell them but i Found ebay to be cheapest.
Its a simple install. All you need are your basic car tools, a way to jack the car up and a collection of your favorite words. I said it is simple, I didnt say it is easy. Getting the muffler off was a bit of a pain. And youll have extra hangers from the v6 muffler which you do not need.

Awesome. Thanks for the tip yet again - I guess Ebay probably is the best place, that's very cheap for a set of mufflers.

Well I've got the tools and a collection of favorite words reserved for messing with my car ready, I'll have to go ahead and grab 'em and the other mods

The coils, wires and plugs with provide a longer, more intense spark thus burning the fuel more thoroughly. It will also improve throttle response. This is what I have heard from people here and not my personal experience.
