Default BBK cold air intake filter

I talked to a sales person from BBK and they told me that the filter was whatever color your oil is. im so lost. in all the pics the filter is blue. But the sales person said to put in red oil.

And is this some special oil?
Do you normally put oil in a CAI filter?
Has anyone ever tried this before?

The sales person says to put the red oil along anywhere where the filter is blue. But wont that make it oily. The reason I want the filter to be red is to match the car. And I dont want to sound rude but I dont want to hear the usual "Save up your money and buy a CAI with a tune". I appreciate yall wanting me to get the best bang for my buck but I dont want a tuner. Thanks in advance.

Yes, most CAI have oiled filters. It is a special oil and cleaner you must buy to clean the filters and it is a process that must be precise! To little oil, bad. Too much oil, also bad. It is also a process that takes the entire day, so you will not be able to use the car unless you have an extra filter. I cleaned my CAI for the first time last month. It had 1 year on it and 10,000 miles. I know I didn't have to clean it yet, most I think clean it every 25k and that is more often than is required. And yes you can change the color. I changed mine from red to blue. Color has no impact on anything.

Most of the aftermarket CAI manufacturers require that a certain amount of oil be applied to the filter element. This is because these filters rely on the oil to trap a lot of the dirt, the paper elements however have a closer "knit" and just rely on the filter itself to contain dirt.
I've never heard of different color oils for different color filters though.

The filter is actually white, and the color is there to help you to make sure that the filter is oiled everywhere.

Oh, okay. In all the pics I saw the BBK filters look blue. The K&N's I've had are red as well as the JLT. I just went to JLT's website and they do sell different color (red/blue) S&B filters with matching oil. I guess I learned something.

Hurray! But I will probably switch to a dry flow air filter. Not that it is hard to clean and oil it but dry flow is so much easier.

Okay. So any brands of oil to get? and to clear the blue oil do I just wash the filter out. Then after it dries i can apply the red oil?

I used S&B oil filter cleaner and oil. You have to spray the cleaner and let is sit then wash it out. You cannot use water under pressure, and no compressed air either. After the filter is white-ish (there will still be some blue remaining), you need to let it fully dry. It must be FULLY dry. Oil is hydrophobic so if there is some water on the filter the oil will not stick. Then you need to find out the exact amount of oil you need to apply. For my JLT it was 49g exactly (if memory serves). So I had to very carefully spray the oil. Making sure that it is covereing everywhere and that it is excatly 49g of oil on the filter.

Thanks so much. I will buy one more filter. One that is in the car then i will turn the other red. How did you know how much oil yours needed. And how did you make sure you used the right amount. Thanks

Found out from JLT. Well, someone called them up and asked and posted here. To make sure that I had the right amount of oil I went down to Bed Bath and Beyond and bought a food scale that is accurate to the gram and then weighed the clean DRY filter.
