I was searching ebay and came across a few USED tuners. However, I've heard that some (or all) are "VIN locked", but can be unlocked for a fee. Does anyone have any info or experience with this?
I just don't want to get a "good deal" and then have to pay to unlock the tuner, and end up paying more. Also, I realize I would have to buy my own tunes... aside from the pre-loaded. I've found a few that seem like a good deal based on new prices... just don't want to get hosed.
ive heard around 150.00 to get it unlocked. i dont know if you would get the support from sct either, not buying new and registering it, might want to call sct and ask them 407-774-2447

So if the person kept the tune... then i will need to get it unlocked? If so would I have to go through sct to unlock it or could someone like brenspeed or tillman do it?

if, like the prev poster said it was returned to stock, and it was the original only time it had been used, you would get the 2nd life and it would be fine. it has 5 lives then its locked and needs to go to sct to get it unlocked. if its vin locked to someone elses car, and you try to load a tune in yours, your car wont start and again, the tuner would have to go to sct. i think it would give you a error if it couldnt download your stock tune into it. theres a chance it could corrupt your tune, and you could have real problems. your taking a big chance with a tuner from some seller on ebay. you`d be better to buy a used one from a private person that used it. theres a thread posted right now from cruizin concepts if he can get 5 people to buy a sct tuner, great price on a new one. theres one other guy on there now, maybe you can come up with 3 more people

If you are interested in getting a little more punch, consider getting a tune/cai combo. If you are looking at a new X3 its around $350, for an extra 150 you could get a JLT cai from AM which will bring even more out of the tune. Follow that with a race tune from bama/tillman and you have an entirely new car
