Default 05 V-6 Front Brake Pad Replacement

Hi everybody, well I have some time off coming up and I'm thinking about replacing the front brake pads on my 05 Mustang V-6. Any thoughts, suggestions or comments? Remember, I'm an old fossil, the last time I work on a car it had points and a carb. The car has about 120K miles on it. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks,
Snowdoggie

front break pads are fairly easy to replace. the rotors come off easily, so have them resurfaced as well. if you have a good mechanical sense around cars, front pads will be easy for you.
best advice I can give is don't let the calipers hang by the brake hoses. use rope or shirt hanger to hang the caliper off the springs. oh, and have a big breaker bar to remove the caliper bolts from the spindle. I don't recall the torque specs for reassembly though. hopefully someone else can chime in here with that and additional info.

have fun!!

the fronts are very easy. mina thing to remember is getting your rotors turned. i had o reilleys do mine. another thing u might think about is doing all four, front and back. the rears are kinda tricky if you really dont have a clue how they work. make sure u use plenty of grease on the back of the pads as well

+1... pull the bolt pins apart and clean good, reinstall with hi temp grease on them and the ends of the pads where they sit in the tin clips. this would be the perfect time to paint the calipers

Another question, back in the old days when we did the front brakes we always greased and pack the bearings. Is that still done today?

Thanks,

For the good tips

See ya,

Snowdoggie

no, the frt bearings are not servicable. if one goes you have to replace the hub assemblies

Well I'm in the middle of doing the front brakes and I can't get the rotors off the wheel flanges. I live on a gravel road and treated it with some chemical and it RUSTS everything. You should see my F-250 Crew Cab. I sprayed WD-40 on it and will let it sit over night. BTW, I did hammer them pretty good, no sign of moving.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Snowdoggie

boy...that could be a problem. PBblaster might help....rubber mallet and some grunt is all i can tell ya. might even carefully try to wedge a screwdriver in between it or through the rotor vents then beat on it. its essential to have them turned though. only cost me 15bucks i think

stupid question but did you remove the little tabs found on one of the wheel flanges on each of the rotors...my front rotors still had the tabs on from the factory that locked them in place..just in case you missed um...

Thanks a lot. Now every time I hear someone's brakes squealing I'm going to think of that.

No the clips to hold the rotor on during shipping and assembly of the car are long gone. Thanks for mentioning that though. Even with the clips on it would move slightly with the wheel off. These rotors are like welded on or should I say rusted on. I guess I’ll see if the WD-40 did anything over the night.

Thanks, Snowdoggie

WD-40 is worthless for freeing up stuck or rusted bolts. Get some PB Blaster or similar product that's designed for it. Learned that years ago the first time I had to remove manifold bolts. PB Blaster will free up in 4-5 hours what it would take 2 weeks of soaking with WD-40 to accomplish.
