So my Mustang can drive itself. Anyone else ever have this probelm?
My 06 V6 automatic is doing something crazy.
On a flat surface, without touching the gas pedal, my car will accelerate 15, 20, 30 mph and even start switching gears. When I brake, the car jolts, as if it's still trying to go. One time it even just shut off on me when I parked.
My first thought was to check the gas cap and make sure it was tightened. Apparently it was not. So I tightened it, thinking problem solved.
Three days later, same problem happens in my job parking lot, in the rain. Thinking maybe I was just slightly hydroplaning, I tried to ignore it. Then finally, last night coming around my apartment complex, same thing happens. It was not raining. And the gas cap this time was fine.
Has anyone EVER had this problem occur? And if so, what did you do to fix it?
Yeah i wouldnt drive it and get it checked out asap. You dont want to be at a stop light and have that happen so you end up rear-ending somebody. I would think it would be under a warranty still.

Sounds like maybe a flaw in the accelerator pedal or the associated circuit. With the drive-by-wire setup in these cars, the pedal is attached to what's basically a glorified volume control knob (potentiometer).
If that's screwed up, or the circuit that reads it's output is, I could see the issue you're describing happening.
Best advice is get it checked out NOW. Whatever's going on is seriously dangerous and you don't want to mess around.
If nothing else works, have a Catholic priest take a look at it.

Haha, yep. Sounds like he's got a case of the Mustang Gremlins.
I've had the exact same thing happen to my '93. I went to take off and I wasn't even touching the pedal and it was accelerating on its own. My dad didn't believe me, so I took him for a ride with my right foot in the seat and my left foot near the brake so he could see what I was talking about. The car was also very hard to stop. I had to apply full pressure to the brakes and that scared me.
I parked the car and my dad told me to let it sit while he took a look at it. He looked at it and found nothing. We got back in it about 2 hours later and it was fine. Nothing wrong with it. I have driven it a few times since then and it has still been fine. Brakes are good and no gremlins in the gas pedal. I think my problem had something to do with the fact that it had been sitting for about a month without being driven and maybe something was stuck. But that obviously isn't your case, being as how you drive the car often.

Any feedback would be most obliged. Thankssssss.
Check the easy stuff first. The driver side floor mat... The floor hook is through the hole... Right?

try recalibrating your throttle. not sure if it really works...seemed to work for me. my car just acted like i touched the gas every now and then for a few seconds then quit. only after i let off the brakes from a stop. turn the key on, but not ignition. wait for some of the lights in the dash to turn off then slowly press the gas pedal all the way down, then let it raise slowly all the way up. again, not sure but i heard that over a collective. worth a try. other than that get it checked out before your hood starts spinning and shooting projectile coolant..baha

Thank you everyone for the replies! I'm going to take it for a diagnostic, then to the Ford dealership, if it can make it until the end of the week..
The car almost killed me in a heavy Florida thunder storm today! The rain was just too much to drive in in the vehicle's condtition. I had to pull over for an hour and wait the rain out before I could drive again.
Being a young chick chilling in a gas station parking lot in the rain, in front of an elementary school for an hour, I received many stares...

Reason: replaced many with much
Yes, I think taking it to a Ford Dealership is a good idea. I don't know where you plan to take your car, but I will tell you that Jarrett Gordon Ford in Plant City at the corner of Park and 92 has always been good to me. MUCH better prices and better service.
By the way, minesbtrthnyrs, check your PM's if you haven't already.

I'm so sorry I took so long to respond! I am going to try the recalibrating tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
Just to give a quick update, since I've posted this, I've taken the car to my local Ford dealership. TWICE. The first time they replaced the mass air flow sensor, which was $400! On the way home from the Dealership, I was turning a sharp corner into the parking lot of my work, and the car completely stalled out, and shut off, power steering went out and all! I called the dealers back and they said it was normal, that the part needed to "get used to" my computer system and such. I believed it, and for a couple weeks after everything seemed fine.
Last week, I was running late to work so I was driving (recklessly), speeding and taking corners roughly. And what do you know, I come to a slowing stop and my car begins to accelerate AGAIN! SAME ISSUE AGAIN!
Not done yet, the worst happened tonight. I was once again turning a sharp corner into my apartment complex, and yet again, I stall out. I turned the key, nothing happened. Then I tried again, gave it some gas, and I was able to get it going once more.
Tuesday it's going back to the dealer, for the THIRD time. Please wish me luck everyone! Because after this ongoing issue, I'm starting to think of BMW's... (haha)
