Default Gas cap light came on

Ok I am trying to figure out what was wrong with my gas cap the light came on a couple days ago then I went and got a new locking gas cap and put it on. Then today the light is off i looked at the seal of the old one and the new one and they look the same not worn or anything..... what could have been wrong with the stock one I had on the car??

simple evap system leak. Meaning the old gas cap leaked. You wont be able to tell just by looking at the cap.

Yes, I had the same problem after a couple years. I had to have the cap replaced.

Normally I would say no, it shouldn't go bad that fast. But you never know, you may have had a faulty cap to begin with. Try tightening the cap, if that doesn't work replace it and you should be fine, Mike. SCT Tuner.

My cap always seems loose but guess it isn't. The gas cap warning popped up once during a long-ish road trip. It was indeed loose that time - vibration I guess. Tightened it and haven't had it happen again. However, it took a couple of weeks before the warning cleared and I was beginning to think the cap was really bad. Wasn't. Could've cleared the warning by disconnecting the battery but I was curious how long it hang around (I didn't think it was REALLY bad).

+1 on that man I didn't get what was going on when I seen the light. I just ended up looking in the owners manual and figured it out and too the guy about disconnecting the battery I did that after I replaced it and it still was on for about 2 more days then it went off and has stayed off since
