Default 2005 Mustang Shift Indicator Automatic Trans Problem

Well my mustang where I have the automatic gear shift and the black plastic that covers it up is now like open apart and you can see down inside of it

any idea how to fix this?

to me it looks like the plastic is just broken or something?

The same happened to me earlier this year and I had to replace the whole shifter. The plastic cover that moved back and forth had broken off the shifter and slid back into the front of the cover. No damage to trans. and worked normally. I had it replaced at my local Ford dealer. They had not seen this particular problem before. I can post a picture later.
