Default Dual Exhaust Installed on 2006 V6 Mustang...not good

Installed a Pypes true dual exhaust upgrade this week on the V6. Gotta tell ya, I wish I could turn back the clock. Had it done by a mechanic and paid $200 on top of the $450 kit cost. First, the drones (or resonance) at 2000 rpm is totally obnoxious. Rest of rpm range sounds great but I spend a lot of time going through or at 2000 rpm so driving became not so fun. Second, I was feeling bad (as in sick) after each drive so I took it back to the mechanic to look for leaks. Sure enough, there was a leak where the x pipe connected just aft of the cats. The fumes were getting inside the car. Now to deal with the resonance issue. I can put in-line resonators into the midpipes for another $150 bones to knock down that resonance at 2000 rpm. Unfortunately, that will take down the the tones at all rpms. Maybe then, it will be fun to drive the Mustang again. So far, a really bad experience. Think hard before doing this.

I had to use resonators when I had Flowmasters - trust me - it will be worth it. Droning SUX. They will help with drone but still let the noise out under full throttle.
You may also be able to keep most of the kit on there and just swap out mufflers for something like Magnaflows (which is what I ended up doing & I love them) for not much more than the resinators. Then sell your Pypes mufflers on here or eBay, etc.

pypes really do drone very badly, they are known for this. I went with muffler deletes cause they are not really a muffler so no drone for me. The problem is that my buddy with a 2006 V6 and an X-pipe tried running my muffler deletes and they sounded terrible. It might just be easier to swap out for some drone free FRPP GTA's

Any way you could make a video or sound clip? I was considering this kit, but don't feel like having to put up with drone...

I don't think a video or sound clip would do the resonance any justice. You really have to be in the car to feel how annoying the resonance can be. Now, once you're through it, the sound and feel are great. Problem is you spend a lot of your driving time going through 2000 rpm. Next time you go out, take notice how much time you spend around 2000 rpm in all gears. Just passing through in lower gears but probably hanging there (or close by) when you're cruising in 5th.
The next thing I'm going to have to do is install resonators. If that works I'll have $800 bucks in the dual exhaust adventure. If it doesn't, I may have to replace my brand new mufflers.

I have the FRPP cat-back dual exhaust. I get drone at 1500 rpm, which is typically 50mph for me (and sometimes 20mph, but who drives 20mph anyway?). I've learned to turn off the overdrive for those short periods when I'm driving at 50, or else hover above or below it to eliminate the drone. Have you tried this? Also, I typically drive with both windows open, which minimizes drone for me as well (though this doesn't work that well in winter!!)

Hope things get better for you!

It might help a little to cut the mid pipe hangers.

Those are there only to help the factory install. Not necessary for everyday driving.

+1 on the GTA mufflers.

sorry its not working out. its good you posted this. i installed a h pipe and gt takeoffs myself for about 550.00 total, and its been great. they have got louder in time but are still real nice sounding. i havent heard much good from the x pipes, and i dont care much for overly loud mufflers.

i have dual violators......and call me crazy, but 1)the drone isnt that bad...anywhere and 2)what drone i have, i actually dont mind/like. if you really cannot stand the 2000 RPM drone, then buy some steeper gears and you wont be in the 2000 RPM band as much

however, the good thing about this is, now you have dual exhaust. so i mean, all you have to is just swap out mufflers until you find ones you like. first try some GT takeoffs, find some on craigslist for like 50 bucks, and slap em on yourself

I have the (fake) dual tailpipes that came with the Razzi ground effects and let me tell you...they sound amazing..Seriously.

I do, however intend to upgrade to true duals in the future. Thanx fr all the posts. I didn't know what to think about the Pypes.

I'm thinking of going JBA for mine, along with JBA shorty headers. Has anybody used these yet????

A Pypes setup lasted three weeks on my car before getting yanked because they sounded so gawdawful bad, and this was after waiting several weeks for a replacement for one of the mid-pipes in the kit that was bent totally wrong (and I had to seriously FIGHT with Pypes customer "service" to get that...)

I also had the rubber part on the Pypes exhaust hangers (which I left in place with the following system) dry rot and crack in less than a year, while the older factory hangers were still just fine.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't buy so much as a lock washer from Pypes at this point.
