Tie rods at 22,000 are unheard off unless you drive on a bombing test range.
You move the tire side to side like you said you were. Hold tire at 3 and 9 o'clock with it off the ground. See how much play there is. Alone it's easier with one side on the ground still so the rack can't move. There is play in the rack without pressure in it from the engine running.
My car and my buddy's are probably punished like no other around. His has done the Cannonball One Lap of America twice. 40,000+ miles on it and he has never needed front end parts. I need ball joints from punishing it on the road courses with race slicks. That is my fault. Once I install the PROPER parts it will be fine.
