Default Where is this smell coming from!

The past 4 or 5 weeks now the inside of my car has a really bad odor. It smells like musky dead animal lol. It smells the worst when my car has been sitting for a while, like over night. When I drive the smell goes away for a short period until its been sitting. I checked every area of the car and cant seem to find where it is coming from. I checked the glove box, cup holder, under the seats, checked the floor and mats, the trunk, inside the hood, the grill, under the car, wheel bay and I even checked to see if the radiator was leaking because I was told that could smell like a dead animal but it isn't. Its not coming from the vents either. I keep the inside of my car very clean. I don't allow anyone to eat or drink in my car so I know there is no old food or spilled drink spoiling. The only thing I can think of is a mouse or small animal died in my car somewhere, but I just cant find where. I need help!! Every time my girlfriend or I get in the car we gag!!!

I had a mouse die inside my old Galaxie and it really stunk.
It had fallen into the door hinge area and it took a while to find it.
Hate to say it but the only way I found it was to get in and really sniff around.

There is an area where the smart junction box is located by the passenger side front on the right side where you can pop the cover off. Make sure it is not wet in there.
I did have a mouse nest in my hoodliner, but no mice in there when I found it.

Let a dog sniff around. They will lead you to it.

No it's not a rotten egg smell its more like a dead animal smell. While looking for the smell yet again I noticed there was a few mouse droppings on the front passenger seat. That leads me to believe there is a dead mouse somewhere in my car but where!!

+1 That would have been my guess. When you cat are getting clogged you get that smell and alot of time more of a darker smoke exiting the car.

Well since you said that I would have to agree with you that there were mice playing.

Look in the two removable panels located at both the driver and passenger side.
A mouse can fit through a space as small as a dime.
If you can't find it, in a few weeks it will just dry up and the smell will be gone.

I looked for a good hour found nothing. I guess I'm just going to have to put a bag of charcoal in there until the smell goes away.

How about taking your center console piece out, there is a bunch of space under there and behind the radio for something to crawl in and croak, and it's not very hard to do, basically 2 philips screws and pull up.

Try looking behind the cabin air filter.

Inside is gonna be a tough one. You gotta look with a light in every square inch. I had a small dead frog in my truck before and it was an awful smell. Anyway, don't be suprised about other species liking our mustangs... a rat or mouse made a nest and ate through my hoodliner last winter

Did you find it yet? I would guess under the seats, rear are easy to look under, could be up in a front one though.
