I had both feet on the brake and it did'nt make any difference at all, and I was pushing as hard as I could, Im suprised I did'nt brake a brake line.

I don't know about that. I was always taught to force a shift into neutral. Might bust the tranny but in that kind of situation its the lesser of two evils.

Even if I did think of putting the car in neutral, the car was still going 75+++Mph and I still would have hit the semi as the car would have never slowed down in time to avoid the collision. This all happened with in 5-10 seconds, and by the time I saw the light changing from green to red and the semi was starting to turn I ony had about 3 seconds left to decide what to do. And by that time I was going way too fast, my only option was to swerve around the semi.
Then I had the road all to myself and I was able to think, but when your on a busy 4 lane road with cars all around you and a semi turning in front of you and your car is stuck in passing gear going 75+++ and you have seconds to do something, you do what you have to at the time.
And if I did put the car in neutral I still would have hit the Semi as I was going too fast to stop, and that 1 second I had used to put the car in neutral was the 1 second I needed to swerve around the semi, so that would'nt have worked. I think at the time what I did, was best in that situation.
It's morning now and today Im going to FORD and get me some Factory Mustang Floor Mats, like the one's in My Trunk. Again, I hope this never happens to any of you!

No, The brakes are not designed to overpower the engine. if they were how would you power brake the car and spin the rear tires. even if the fronts locked up (or ABS kick on) you still have to over come to momentium of the car. That's asking a lot if your doing 80.

Quick warning about turning off the key. DON'T TURN IT TO FAR. you may lock out your steering. then you are F****d my buddy did that in his 69 camaro and we just missed a parked car.

Thank God you are OK... That's freakin' scary!!!!

I actually had a dream 2 nights ago this happened with my husbands car while I was driving it... I had to remove the mat when we bought it because it kept jamming up under the accelerator....

just spend the 80.00 and get some nice pony mats from american muscle and plan on replacing them every 2 years. its cheap safety really ( ive had that happen in old beaters ive had with cheap carpet and mats)

Oh, no argument from me Ron. Thats a 1 and a million kind of event and there is no one right way to handle it. Obviously you handled it just fine. I was just saying when I took dirvers training some 10 years ago I remember the 'stuck open throttle' scenario and the text book solution was to force the car into neutral, then find some open grass and do donuts until and brake until you were stopped. If no open field was available then you had to "think on your feet"

Happened to me getting on the freeway once. I was at WOT up to traffic speed and let off to merge in. Only the car stayed at WOT and the back of a Semi truck trailer was looming large in the windshield. Got on the clutch and brake but just then the gas peddle released on its own. No feet on the floor mat? What had happened was the floor mat hook was not engaged. Most likely since the last car wash. Now every time I open the door to enter the car, I look to see if that hook is showing through the floor mat hole. Never have had the problem since. Did get my circulation charged up for a while.

its actually probably a good thing you didnt turn the car off. with the car off, power steering is gone and you most likely wouldnt have swerved enough to avoid hitting the semi. the best thing you coulda done there was throw it in neutral i think. even though the car would have been bouncing off the rev limiter, you would have still had power steering, and you would have been slowing down. glad you got through it though!

glad you are ok! yeah like mentioned before, I think 4 people died from something like this. Even if you shift into park and ruin your engine or transmission, it would be better than to keep going lol

Hard way to learn, but now you know why the factory mats have that hole at the back edge that attaches to the hook on the factory carpet.

Ditch the crappy generic Wal-Mart mats and either use the factory mats or get a custom fit set that have the retainer hole.

Glad to hear you're ok.

Either get yourself some OEM mustang mats or cut a hole in your Walmart one so the little floor hook can fit through. That should stop it from slithering up underneath your gas pedal again.

One of the reasons the brakes didn't work well as you'd have no power assist in that situation.

The power brakes use engine vacuum to increase the force applied to the brakes, and with the engine going WOT, vacuum drops off to zip.

The design doesn't really expect the gas and the brake to be parked on the floorboard at the same time.

No Problem, I understand. I guess trying to save the Original floor mats and not use them was a mistake. Today I had to go for a ride to overcome my fear of yesterday, I was a little leary at first about getting on the gas a little, but befor long I was 1 with the car again. I went to the local FORD delear and ordered another set of factory floor mats, and took them damn Wal Mart ones and threw em out, I used some newspaper for today to keep the carpets clean.
I guess you never think something like this can happen to you and then BAM! it does. I hope everyone on here checks to make sure your floor mats are locked in place befor you go for a ride.
I thank you all for your kind comments and YES I did beat that rice burner at the light, Im glad I did as I needed the right hand lane to go around the Semi.
I wish you all a Safe and Happy Drive in your Stangs!
