So, I was thinking of getting a Bamachips tune once I purchase my SCT tuner this weekend, but.... I ran into a slight problem/ question. I know someone who is willing to sell me a preprogrammed tuner for almost half off (brand new too!) but its a "preprogrammed" one. Here's my question: Do the preprogrammed tuners allow the loading of custom tunes? Also when Doug email's me the tune, I'm going to need the PC interphase cable too right? Thanks!!

nope, preprogrammed will not allow you to upload tunes. just buy your custom tuner from bamachips and they give you three free custom tunes, and free updates when you add mods.

Even for the "pre-programmed" ones, you have to give SCT your cars code from the computer so they can match it. (I am starting to think those codes are simply a key as to where in memory to load the maps to) Plus there are other specifications submitted when purchasing which severely reduces the number of cars it will work with.
If the tuner is an X3 you can use it just don't use any of the tunes in it now. (if it is an SF3, I don't know for sure) If you flash you car with an incompatible map there is a chance you will be taking the car to the dealer on a hook to get the computer sorted out. You will need a USB cable for it (common) and then download the file loading software from SCT's web site and install it on your PC (no macs) before connecting the tuner to your computer or else you will be installing drivers by hand.
Running some supposed numbers... you get the tuner for 1/2 price. $200 bucks about. Then you need tunes. If you opt for 3 tunes, you will be in the 150 dollar range. So your very close to the about 400 bucks the shops are selling the new tuners with their tunes in it. You will save 50 to 60 bucks. But you will have hassle to pay.
Buy a new tuner from one of the shops, Specify your 3 tunes and you tuner comes delivered with tunes safe for your car. No PC, no USB cable, and no emailed tunes. From the box to your car.

It's an SCT SF3 Enhanced X3 #3015 model. (there is also a #3000 available) It was used on a mustang (by previous owner). If i get this baby, can I download the tunes from bama chips for example with the USB cable?(after i pay the 50 bucks of course..) 379 brand new is a lil steep for me right now so seeing it for 175 is quite an attractive offer. From my understanding the #3000 has the ability to load 3 custom tunes downloadable from various places or (if u buy new) from dealer. The 3015 is the preprogramed version. I'm leaning toward the X3 which will probably be empty... then ill buy a $50 racing tune from bamachips or have doug write me one for my given mods... what do you guys think?

If the previous owner reloaded his stock tune you can use the tuner. If he did not, the tuner is locked to his VIN and must be un-locked by SCT for $150.

I bought my SCT X3/SF3 (#3015) from AmericanMuscle.com because I was running a little lean after the install of my BBK CAI. The nice thing about AmericanMuscle is that they will provide you with free custom tunes for LIFE as long as you own your Mustang. I have been very pleased with the gains from their tunes to this point (Running a 91+ Eco for road trips, a 91+ Performance for everyday, and a 91+ Performance to calibrate my speedometer/odometer for winter driving on the 16" Bridgestone Blizzaks).

ive got the x3#3000. you can upload tunes real easy, but if you have 3 on it, then you have to replace one to upload. its not a problem. i keep my tunes on my desktop, and can load a different one into it any time. if that x3 was used by someone then returned to stock, then you switch vin numbers, it should be fine but it will have one less life in it. it has 5 lives. i dont know how to check to find out how many have been used. maybe that person will know.
the cable you need is just a usb printer cable, nothing special. the only thing that might be a issue would be support from sct. ive had to have them take over my computer and make some changes to the tuner 1 time, and those guys are awesome. took a couple minutes to get me straight. but thats buying a new one and registering it. i think buying one used the x3 might be better than the sf3. i see no use for the canned tunes. just get tunes for your car.

Thanks for clarifying what locked and "unlocked" meant. And yes it is unlocked, and as far as i know has his custom tune still in it, with 2 slots open. I will probably either override his tune or just get 2 other custom tunes. All SCT tuners have the option of returning to stock at any time right? (for those lovely visits to the dealership) Also am I going to have to run a 91 octane tune to get any power out? I have heard that it increases mpg, but makes those gallons a lil bit more expensive too.
