Ok, I need some help with gears. Transmission/gears/etc... is something I know nothing about when it comes to modding. Let me put my main point up front: I prefer torque over speed. I could really care less that my car gets up to 120 since I rarely get the chance to get it above 85. I care more about off the line power. With that said, I have seen in other posts people mentioning 3.73 gears and I think 4.10 (I think that's right?) and these posts mentioned that using one of these different gears will help the low end. I have an AUTOMATIC, so my question is is this something I should cinsider? what do the numbers 3.73/4.10 stand for? What is the difference between the two? Is this just one part that would be changed out? Where is this located? How much do these cost? Is it an easy install? Will it take away from the top end power(I really don't care that much, but still want to know)? Thanks a lot for any explanation regarding these gear mods.

With 4.10s your driveshaft will rotate 4.1 times for every single tire rotation. The engine will rev up faster, but it also limits top end speed and raises rpms. Go with the 3.73s unless your're planning on doing a bunch of performance mods. Installing gears is a real specialty job, not really for the do-it-yourselfer. Need a good gear guy. Gears run anywhere from $150-200 and $200-$300 more to install.
With the 5-speed auto I see no reason not to do a 4.10. I however am splitting the difference and when I get my gears I am doing a 3.90 just because I sometimes have to do intestate driving to go home and see family.
What you gears will affect is your gas milage. Which I am hoping to offset by putting in an aluminum driveshaft and underdrive pullies.
So, with that said... I agree above. This is not a do it yourself mod and this coming fom someone that has doen engine swaps and just about every other mod tha has ever been done to my cars in the driveway. I won't even think of setting up my gears.
They are located in the center of the rear axle. If you look up under your car from behind the rear bumper they are housed in the Pumpkin. The pumpking as it is referred to (actually the differential housing) in the large round section in the middle of the axle.
Prices are as stated above.

Get the 4.10's if you want to see a big difference if you want to add a supercharger or a power adder then i would not go past the 3.55's or so...the 3.73's are good for everyday driving they are not as aggressive as the 4.10's so i would get the 4.10's if you have a auto and 3.73's for the stick, since you dont want to be shifting all the time...

Just the info I was looking for. So 3.73 would be best for my V6 stick? Up from the 3:31 stock. Will it affect MPG? Is it the seat of your pants pull? Will the car still be pratical to rive every day?
Can I retune the X-cal 2 to it when decide to go with the mod or is that a pain? I know I know questions questions but thanks!....LOL

3.73s should be fine. You may see a small decline in MPG, but nothing drastic and shouldn't impact daily use. You should notice a nice low end pull off the line as compared to the 3.31s. Your crusing RPMs will also increase. As with any mod, you should have the tune adjusted for the gears. You'd need to coordinate that with your tuner as it isn't something you can adjust yourself.
4.10s are ok if you remain naturally aspirated. Add a supercharger and it's too much.
Depends... I have 4:10's and I'm running a Vortech... of course I have set of M&H drag radials on the back full time!! (I've got 7000 miles on them and they are still in good shape!!!) LOL!

OK so since I am getting the x-cal2 from bamachips and I'd like to run the car with the new muffler and tuner first then if needed do gears. Do I have to get bamachips to e-mail me me a new tune for the 3:31 or 4:10's? Or do I need to send it back to them to recalibrate? Thanks

You should be able to adjust your gear ratio right on the X-Cal2...
great!! Thanks John!
Now the only thing to do is to locate a shop in San Diego that will do the gears.
Also anyone know where to get a pulley set? I went on steeda's site but only saw the set for GT's
