Default Hurst Shifter installed

Well installed the Hurst shifter today! Took about 2 hours to do with a lift at the hobby shop on base(first time using a hobby shop and a lift for the matter ). First impressions are that it is a shorter shift but you have to use more force to get it in gear. Not sure if it will break in any. Also because I have to force it in gear it seems to take (on some gear combos) the same amount of time to shift as the stock shifter. I went back and made sure all the bolts werent over tightened and that the long side for the shifter linkage was on the drivers side. So hows everyone elses?

Congrats... Hope you used loctite! The shift lever bolts will back out over time. The notchiness will improve (either that or you just get used to it). I still like the positive feel better than the stocker. You'll get used to it in a week or so.

yep loctite on the nut for the linkage arm(directions) and both bolts connecting the handle. I like the positive shifting also but it just seems that if i were to do it fast I might not go in so I'm taking my time with shifting for awhile, hopefully it will loosen up a bit.

Edit: Hey do u know what size aftermarket shift balls I need to be looking at?

If you want a ball, I am pretty sure Hust sells adaptors so that you can get basically any size ball to fit on the Hurst rod.

However, I personally recomend the Hurst T-handle. Looks good, and provides more weight for easier/faster shifting.

3/8" 16 thread. I'm going to switch to the T-handle at some point.

Yeah if I change my tranny fluid it would be royal purple, thats what I had put in the rear end when I put the T-Lok in. But for now I'll just work it and see if it gets better.

yea i got the hurst shifter from frpp isntalled, seems like you need to use more force to get them in but im sure its only in the begining, i was told it should break in after 500-1000 miles or so...but they are very percice and fun do you guys really think that changing the trany oil can make a difference? maybe also the gear oil?

Yesterday night I retightend the chrome stick and used more thread locker. Bottom bolt was finger loose and the top wasnt too tight either. But I tightend the crap out of it this time and was a bit more generous with the thread locker so should be all good now.

That chrome bar really heats up. Figure the continual heating/cooling loosens those bolts over time.

I get a horrible vibration, rattling noise with my hurst especially about 3k rpm... I'm about ready to take it out! I've tried just about every "trick", but nothing seems to happen. I've used black tape between the chrome handle and the shifter, black tape on the threads where the ball screws in, and put some felt between the back red rubber thing and the floor pan... nothing seems to help. Anyone know of anything else I could try before I rip the thing out?

Are you sure it hasn't come loose from the body? Have seen a few cases where the nuts came loose. Did you use loctite when you installed?

I'm pretty sure that it isn't loose... I was thinking that it might be too tight! I haven't had a chance to get under the car lately... I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do is remove it all together and put it back on... making sure loctite is used on every bolt and to add dampners where I can...
