Consumer Reports Buying Guide, lists the Mustang V6 as a "don't buy" because it's reliability is the lowest of any vehicle made by Ford. It surpassed the Lincoln Navigator, which had 49 problems out of 100 vehicles made (in 2004). Breakdown is on page 159-160 for a comparison of the V8-V6. V6's reliability is a "black circle" The GT is a "white circle". Gas milage was the same for both vehicles, at 20MPG (average). CR did a more in-depth look in April 2005. A very brief summary on page 174.
More on page 198 where the V8 is called a "good bet" and on 199 where the V6 is named as a "used car to avoid". On page 191, the GT is listed as a "reliable used car", along with the '01 V6.
The V8 is listed as a "recommended" model, whatever that means.
Let the flaming begin
The good news is that the people with a 2003-2004 Mustang GT got the most reliable one ever made. That model was more reliable than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, which have both slipped slightly in recent years. A Consumer Report's "Best Buy".
