Default 2005 Mustang v6; GT Sway Bars

Last Tuesday I won an Ebay auction for GT take-off sway bars (front and rear) for the incredible price of $33 SHIPPED. ($20 + $13 shipping) I recieved them in the mail today. The bars were complete except of course for the 6 mounting nuts and bolts for the rear bar. I stopped in at the local Ford dealership to pick them up but the parts dept guy said they had none in stock and would have to order. He also said that it would be over $45 for the parts and that i'd be better off buying bolts & nuts the same size elsewhere. So he gave me the sizes and specs and i'm going to get the bolts and install the rear bar tomorrow.

In the mean time I decided to install the front bar. I drove the car up on my ramps and began inspecting the front bar and how it was held on. After a few minutes of deliberation and about 20 minutes of wrenching I had it off. Its kind of awkward under there and the sides are attached to ball joints so you have to hold the bolt with a ratchet while you turn the nut with a wrench but anyway. I compared the v6 bar to the GT; the GT bar being about 3/8" thicker than the v6 but overall pretty similar (MAN, I should've taken pictures...) About another 20 minutes later I tightened the last nut to secure the new GT front sway bar in place.

So I took it for a spin around the block and WOW. The front end feels so much more solid!

Now I CAN NOT WAIT to get the rear bar on there! Gonna be SO AWESOME!

(I apologize for the unnecessary use of capital letters but I am really excited; the mod bug has bitten!)

What a fantastic deal. You can occasionally find a gem on ebay.

UPDATE!

I installed the rear sway bar today before I went to work (I start at 3pm ) The difference is like night and day. We've got a pretty tight turn up the street from my house that the 'Stang wouldn't take at 30 without sliding all around like mad. Today I took it at 35 without losing traction.

I recommend this mod to all v6 owners. Its cheap and absolutely transforms your car.

I'm thinking about picking up a Font and Rear Stabilizer Bar set from a company on E-Bay for about $200. In their ad, they list the following:

This auction is for a Ford OEM Mustang GT Front & Rear Stabilizer Bars (Anti-Sway Bars). Fits all 2005 - 07 Mustangs. This is a complete set with:
  • Front Stabilizer Bar with brackets and Bushings.
  • Rear Stabilizer Bar with Link, brackets and Bushings.
So I'm guessing that the larger Front Stabilizer Bar would use the same hardware used in the v6 Front Stabilizer Bar? What about the rear? What kind of nuts and bolts would (and where) I need to pick up to attach the Rear Stabilizer to my v6 that originally didn't come with one.

Also let's say that I decide to get my Mustang lowered (up to an inch in the front, and 1.2 - 1.5 inches in the rear) would these stabilizer bars still work sufficiently with the car lowered a little bit?

Sorry if these are newb questions but I ran across these a couple of hours ago on E-Bay and at $200 they seem like a good deal for a complete set. Not as good as a $33 deal, lol but a lot better than the aftermarket ones I've seen on the net, especially when an aftermarket Front Stabilizer Bar goes for over $200.

The front stabilizer bar uses the same bolts and nuts that are already holding the stock v6 bar on. The bar should come with the bushings already on it, you just slip the bracket over the bushing and replace the v6 bar with the GT bar.

The rear bar will need some bolts and nuts since the v6 (except pony packages) does not come with a rear anti-sway bar. I went to the Ford dealership and they told me it would cost $45+ for 6 nuts and bolts so I got the sizes from the Ford parts dept. and bought them at a local Auto-Hardware store for around $10.

You'll need 6 bolts & locking nuts to match them;
4 - 10mmx30mm bolts, 4 - 10mm locking nuts
2 - 12mmx65mm bolts, 2 - 12mm locking nuts

When I bought mine they didn't have 12x65, they had 12x60 or 12x70 so I went with the 70 and they worked just fine. I also had to put a washer to keep the links from shimmying around inside the brackets on the car, again; no big deal.

Make sure you get locking nuts so ensure that they dont come off and if you need some pics of how its supposed to look when its done let me know, i'll be happy to snap some and post them for you.

Oh and - have fun!

I ran my '06 convertible with the standard V6 front bar and a GT take-off rear bar for a few weeks. It was much more neutral than original, much nicer experience in turns.

Then I swapped-in the GT front bar, and it transformed the handling: turned the car from a pleasant boulevard cruiser to a useful cornering machine. Wow.

Then I got a 22mm rear bar: another transformation. Nearly no understeer, very flat and stable, with quicker turn-in.

Next, I'm shopping for lowering springs, not more than an inch, please.

How much difference in size (mm) is there between the GT and V6 front sway bars. I installed a rear bar on my son's 05. Same story with the bolts for the attaching arms as Black 05. I also have a 05 vert and was able to order the bolts and nuts to attach to the shock towers for less than $10 from a Ford dealer. Part # HB 1 AND HN 2.

Seems to me the V6 front bar is 31mm, GT is 34mm (1 and 3/8 inches). GT rear bar is 19mm (3/4 inch).

I believe the bolts are HB1 for the 4 outside ones (near the struts) and HB2 for the 2 that go through the links. The nuts are respectively HN1 and HN2.

I'm not sure about exact thickness but the GT bar was probably a good 1/4 thicker at least. Damn - again - I should have taken pics...

One thing I think most of you are missing..,is that after a swap in the Sway bar, springs and or shocks...Have you alignment checked! Although I drive a GT (FRPP Suspension 1.5" drop), all of us need to make sure we take this extra step.

Also for you V6 Guys & Girls...I have a friend who is making a Shelby CS6 (w/SC) out of his V6. FAST! Very nice looking too! We are about even on 0-60 and up (only non SC power adders on my GT so far). Handles and runs like you would not believe!

Glad to see you guys & girls are modding your cars too....

Is there really any difference between the V6 and GT front swaybar in terms of ride quality? they look like similar though. ive had my rear sway bars installed already and it was easy. im hesitant to replace the front since both sway bars look pretty much same.. any inputs? thanks a lot..

The GT front bar will make a noticeable difference. If by ride quality you mean straight-ahead over the lumps and bumps, not much between the two, they should not really come into play until you try to lean it over in a corner. Then it makes a difference.

I went through the panoply of front and rear bars and now have a Steeda adjustable front bar (1-3/8" [34mm?]) and an H&R rear bar (26mm). I can't think of a better combination yet.
