Basically what we are talking about is loading aftermarket programs onto the car's computer. Typically this is done with either the SCT Xcal2 or the Predator. Both are handheld tuning devices. When you buy one from a distributor, it will come typically come with 3 tunes. One for 87 octane fuel, one for 91 (or sometimes 89) and one for 93 octane. It works like a round-robin. When you load a tune, it will store the one that is already on the car's computer onto the handheld. For instance: If I wanted to load the 93 tune, the handheld tuner would now have the 87, 91, and Stock tunes on. So you just keep swaping out one computer program at a time depending on which one you want to run. The tunes adjust different parameters such as engine timing, shift points, air/fuel mixture, etc...You can later buy different tunes that are set up for either torque or performance or race for each of the different octanes. Most people who get a Cold air intake (CAI) will also get a tuner. It is a good idea to get a combo deal where the tuner and CAI come together. And the tunes on the handheld will be taylored for that specific intake. This is a VERY good way to do it because if you just slap on an intake without a tune, you may be running too lean (too much air per unit of fuel) which is bad for the engine and has the potential to cause damage. You also would not want to just slap on any old CAI and then load a tune that is not adjusted for it because once again the air/fuel ratio may be off. Remember, computers are stupid they only do what we tell them. So...if you are going to get a tuner and also have plans of getting a CAI, it is best to get both of them together in a combo deal. The absolute best thing to do would be to take the car to a DYNO and have them write a truley CUSTOM tune for the car with or without a CAI. The tunes that you get from the net are based off of tests done with their car that they used to create the tunes and like a fingerprint each engine is a little different. You will be fine with the tunes that come with the handheld tuner and the additional ones you can get from REPUTABLE website businesses, but the DYNO tune would be ideal. The benefit of a tuner w/ CAI is you can expect about a 20 horsepower gain with our cars if running the 93 octane. Some have reported a little more some a little less. But it will also greatly improve the general driving of your car. Resonsiveness and shifting will feel much better than with the factory tune. Hope that explains it in a nutshell!
