Default Strange whine when auto trans is shifting gears

I have a V6 with an auto trans. Has anyone experienced a whining noise at the peak RPM just prior to a gear change. It is loudest when the tranny shifts from 2nd to 3rd. From the drivers seat it sounds like it is coming from the lower passenger side of the engine compartment. At first I thought it was a heat shield vibrating but I went under the car and either manipulated or tightened every heat shield I could find with no difference. I cant tell if it's associated with the engine or the transmission but it is definitely RPM related. I can only get it to happen when the car is moving, revving won't reproduce the sound.

I do have the whine at peak RPM, mine is also found midway in the shift sequence in 1st and 2nd. If I baby the throttle I can maintain the whine, or when decelerating from a light throttle position.

I swear it sounds like I have a blower! It is THAT loud.

Even pedestrians turn and check out my ride.

41,000 miles and no loss of power or shifting ability so it must not be a problem.

I like the noise, I'm assuming it is just the way the lower gears are synchronized.

I'll try to get a video tomorrow and see if it matched what you have.

There have been a number of V6 owners who have complained of the tranny whine (especially in 2nd gear). All have been told by Ford that it's normal.

Default Normal my eye...

Ya, the dealership said they couldn't reproduce the sound so I'm going to have to go back and take a test drive with the service guy to point it out. Normal or not, I would rather it be addressed now before it turns into something more serious later as I am painfully close to being out of warranty. If a noise like that is normal, why didn't it do it for the first two years of ownership.

I get the whine when decelleration in 1st or 2nd.

Here's a clip: Putfile - SOHCman Transmission Whine during decelleration 2006 Mustang

The whine is audible just before I get to the red car, and as I cross the bridge.

Tomorrow, I will try to get the whine coming over the hill into town.

Hard to believe anybody would complain... I think it sounds awesome!

Sounds like aluminum timing gears in an old V8!!!

I've found it's usually FWD owners who find it strange -they're not used to having the tranny next to the right thigh . . .

Weird, but mine seems to emminate from under the car.

If the windows were up you probably wouldn't hear it...

Default No noise here

I have 25K+ miles on mine and have never heard that noise. Deffinately can't be normal. I am however noticing a faint whine from my power steering when I'm turning at super slow speeds, like when I pull into my parking spot at the end of the day.

Zen,

You have Violator mufflers, you can't hear ANYTHING other than your pipes!

SOHC

PS: Your power steering is just whining because it can't take any more for one day!
