I am considering obtaining about an '06 V6 automatic. I was wondering, is there some way to program the gears to shift at earlier intervals thus conserving gas? Like instead of shifting from 1st to 2nd at 15 mph and 3,000 rpm after 2.2 seconds, can i change it to shift after only like 1.5 seconds. And can i change it so it shifts at slower speeds? Or do i not want to mess with stuff like that. Keep in mind, i am handy (give me directions i can follow them), but i do not know a whole lot of mechanics with cars.
Also, before you even consider it, i am not going to shift from 1st,2nd,3rd, then "D". That is bad and i know it.
Yes, you can reprogam your shift points if you have a handheld tuner like the SCT Xcal2 or the Diablo Predator. Most of the people on here seem to have the Xcal2 including myself. If you are looking for the best performance gain for the buck then I highly recommend getting a tuner/CAI combo. It will come with three tunes on it, specifically written for that CAI, that all you have to do is load up to your computer. There will be one for 87 octane, 91, and 93. Apart from the individual tunes, you will also be able to make adjustments such as idle RPMs, shift points, and a bunch of other stuff that I'm really not knowlegeable enough to mess with yet.

Thankyou
The V6 is very upshift happy from the factory... You'll actually be in 3rd gear at 16 MPH... When I complained to my Ford engineer buddy about how upshift happy my car was his reply was "We spend a lot of time optimizing the shift schedule for increase gas mileage..." Sooooo... I don't really think you are going to see much of an increase by lower the shift points even further...
Manually shifting the tranny is not a bad thing with these trannies... the tranny is computer controlled... so in fact you are not really directly doing the shift... you are telling the computer you want to shift... the computer will then decide whether it thinks it's safe to shift and if it is it will then shift the car...
Okay, thank you/ But i have had a question for a long time now. Where do you hook up the Xcal to? like what part of the car? And can i just press the buttons on the Xcal and figure out how to program it?

The handheld tuners plug into the ODB-II port, which is located just under the dash (on the edge) just to the left of the steering wheel.. (by your left knee..
You simply follow the on screen instructions to program the car...
What are the factory "shift points" on the automatic?
Sometimes I have to back out of the throttle to get the tranny to upshift.
The tach just wants to keep going right past redline but won't shift.
Can these "shiftpoints" be programmed for RPM's or just by speed?
I don't want to be redlining (or higher) everytime at WOT.
The car would accelerate better by shifting, not revving higher.

Not sure what the stock shift points are.. other than I know at light throttle my car would in 3rd at 16MPH!
Now... When you are just driving around at part throttle the computer shifts based on MPH. When you go WOT it looks at RPMs. Except for if there was a downshift.. then it seems to use MPH... it's still a bit confusing to me... My car when I go from a stop and go WOT will shift right around 5950 RPMs (But the tach will actually show OVER 6,000...) At this point it is strictly using the WOT shift point of 5950 RPM... HOWEVER if I'm in 4th gear and got WOT and the car downshift to 3rd, it will use the MPH shift point to upshift up to 4th... confused yet???? LOL
Now I will say... even stock, if I went WOT from a stop the car would basically look like it was redlining ever gear... but I have also learned that my tach is off a bit..
Now... will your car actually shift, or will it hit the rev limiter??? (ignoring your tach for the moment...)

Don't know what rev limiter is set at, so I couldn't tell you.
Occasionally, in 1st or 2nd (like after a burnout) the tach will go right past 6000 RPM until I back out of it, haven't let it go much higher.
In 3rd or higher it goes right to 6000 and shifts.
Without wheel spin it shifts at 6000 but it feels a little sloppy.

I was wondering, could i program the stang with a XCal to shift at a sooner point? And not do damage to the engine? I know the car is already upshift happy, but lets take that out of the equation for a moment. Will it be bad for the engine to shift when its at 1500 rpm, but at a designated speed? I am not thinking about anything drastic, just like -2MPH per shift point, the mileage will be minimal, but it will be there nevertheless.
You don't need to change shiftpoints to get better mileage.
V6s can get 28-32MPG on the highway and better than 20 in town.
Just drive with a light pedal and coast a lot.
A good set of duals will boost mileage 1-2 MPG by dropping exhaust restriction to nothing.

Right after fillup, here's my estimated mileage to empty.

I know this is going to be a question with a simple answer and I'll feel dumb for asking but I'll ask anyways. How the heck does that say 400 and something miles to E??? I'm not sure if I remember but My car as it is now full is like 233 to E when I full up. Kinda confused here.

I do 90% highway driving.
My daily round-trip to work is 190 miles.
Average speed on the highway between 65-85.
Average MPG is 28.
16 gal tank = 16 x 28 = 448 miles per tank.
Consistantly.
Love my V6...
