2005 V6 Mustang Trouble filling up at the gas station
I've been going to this same gas station with the same guy pumping my gas since I bought my stang. About a week ago I asked him to fill it up as I always do about every week and the pump wouldn't put any gas in the tank. He told me I was full. I knew I wasn't (I wouldn't be at a gas station if I was full lol). He then turned the pump upside down and ONLY then it worked...Anyone ever hear of this problem? He suggested that there is air in the gas tank. Not sure how thats possible. Thanks for the help in advance guys, its much appreciated.

This is a pretty old problem on the '05 models and there is a TSB for it and they have to replace your gas tank. I have had it happen occasionally, but not enough to spend the time to have it fixed, and since I only use Chevron or Unocal, their pumps seem fine. And yes, turning the handle up seems to be the universal "quick-fix."
You may want to search the TSB "sticky" thread for a number on it.

Has to do with S197 'STANGs, not V-6 or V-8 specific.
Replacement of gas tank as solution only applies to vehicles made on or before 4-25-2005.
For build dates after 4/25/05 and for 2006 model year, they already have the new tank design.

Well, there you go - all the pertinent info - good man!
I know mine was built 10/4/04 so it should apply. Don't know when his was built, but if this is the first time it happened in all this time, I don't know if it's going to be a big issue. Hasn't been for me (knock on wood).

I had the same problem and ignored it till I was 200 miles before my warranty ran out. Got to use that warranty for something right?
They replaced my gas tank twice with no results. Then they adjusted the filler neck and it straightened everything out. Make sure they adjust the frigging filler neck.

Thanks guys. Not sure if I feel like getting it fixed right away since I don't feel like being without my car and flashing back my tune. It won't get worse and I won't be able to fill up at all will it?

It won't get worse, it is a design issue, not a deterioration issue.
I had it happen once, and just never used that same pump, again. Problem solved. In addition to turning the nozzle up, as others have suggested, the tsb for late 2005 and 2006's simply suggests using a different pump.
I have also found that if you pull the nozzle out a little, or break the air seal around the filler tube, it sometimes works better.

Mine was rediculous. I'd go to a gas station, pay, start pumping and after 2 gallons it would shut off and wouldn't turn back on. So i'd have to go inside and have the credit moved to the next pump and then pull the car up and start pumping again and it would shut off after another gallon or two. I'd go through 3-4 pumps per station before I found one that would work and half the time I would go through all of them without finding one that would work and i'd leave with half a tank of gas. I tried turning the nozzle this way and that and pulling it out and tweaking it around and such with no luck.
I used to have a business account with Exxon/Mobil and out of 3 local stations there were only 2 pumps that worked for me. I believe there were a total of 8 pumps at each station. So thats 2/24ths of the pumps that would actually work. Imagine pulling into a station with 12 pumps and having to find the 1 pump that will work.

Yea thats exactly what happenes to me. Then after about 2 gallons you try to flick the button again and the pump reacts like the tank is full.

i notice it only happens when the pump nozzles have that big plastic thing that extends all the way to the front of the nozzle tip.... at gas stations where the metal nozzle tip is still a few inches exposed, i don't have the fill up issue - very strange

"That big plastic thing that extends all the way to the front of the nozzle tip" is part of the emissions system (Kill the Tree Huggers!). It is supposed to return vapors that escape while fueling back into the tank rather than let them escape into the atmosphere.
When they started putting them on gas pumps (in the 1980's, as I recall) the problem filling happened with many cars. At the time, we discovered that if you simply pull the "plastic thing" back, allowing a little air into the connection and breaking the suction, the problem didn't happen. What your describing is probably the same effect, a "work around" for the Mustang which may be a little more sensitive to the same connection.

yup that's the thing. if i go to stations that are either older or not a major company i have not problem.... i usually fill up at a USA GAS station by me that's fairly cheap (just $3.50 a gal!) and their pumps don't have the emissions thing....
