Default 2005 Mustang V6 Intermittent Idle Problems

My Mustang is an 2005 V6 completely stock and has been having idle problems recently. When this problem occurs, the idle drops down to 500 RPM and fights to stay running. Usually this happens as I am slowing down at an intersection or coming to a stop, however it is not a consistent problem and seems to happen only once to twice a week. If it dies, it still fights to stay running when I restart, usually causing me to give it some gas to keep it running if I'm at a stop light. I have also noticed that if it can keep running and I put the accelerator down while driving and gun it for a few seconds that it will idle normally the next time I come to a stop.

I have searched forums and found posts by other owners who have had similar problems, but have yet to find anyone who has found a solution to the problem. I know about the TSB about fuel pump problems, but I this seems to be different issue. If anyone has any information or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same probem on a 92 Ford Explorer. Rough idle and surging at idle and low rpm (under 1000). It ended up being the throttle position sensor going bad. What sucked was neither the Chiltons nor the Haynes book even showed that sensor existing. Had to take it to a shop and get it thrown on the computer to figure it out.

Does it happen after driving on the highway? There was a TSB, but I think it said "hesitation on acceleration after long cruise."

I'm thinking the TPS also. I've had that same problem on all my cars. It has always been the TPS.

Thank you for the replies! I will look into the TPS and see what I can figure out. I appreciate the help.

My car does the same thing. It is the TPS. I usually reset the comp. when I encounter the problem. Usually keeps it running well until about 50 miles or so (once all diag. tests have been run).. I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet (no more $$$)... It's easy to replace. Disconnect the battery, unscrew two torx screws, swap the TPS, screw it back in. connect the battery, and you are on the road smoking ricers in no time.
