I want to change my exhaust pipe and wanted to know which would work and sound best on the 4.0. an h-pipe or an x-pipe which one would give the best performance and sound thanks.

I have a prochamber by Mac performance with their headers and mufflers. No X or H. I get more compliments on sound than I can count. I've been told it sounds better than the CA special. The performance? The only other mods I have are a throttle body spacer and diablo 87 tune w/stock airbox. My dyno was done at JBA about a month ago - 211 RWHP and 253 RWT. I'm doing the SCT tuning (in place of Diablo) Mac CAI and under drive pulley this week.

would the x-pipe sound good on my v6 with the gt mufflers?
I was running GT H-pipe, mufflers and left pipe. Today I put in a Ford Racing Performance Products x-pipe. Not really sure what I think. It sounds fine, but I'm not sure if it is different in any way.
I managed to get one JBA header in today, so if I don't get to it tomorrow, I'll be running one manifold and one header for awhile!
I don't want the exhaust so loud that you can't hear the radio at highway speed though. but still have a nice low rumble. that's why I went with the gt mufflers.

Well i imagine that a pair or GT mufflers on a 4.0 is not as loud as the same mufflers on a 4.6. And on my 4.6, the exhaust is not very loud at all. With the radio at about 1/4-1/3 i cannot her the exhaust unless i strain or i go WOT or something close.
This is why i am going to step up and get some FRPP GTA's. But they are not so much louder than thraoty.
Which sound do you want? a little louder or a little depper/thraoty?
I would prefer deeper and throaty not louder. I have the gt mufflers on the car right now. I was just trying to decide wrether or not the put an h-or x-pipe on the car? cause as it is now the pipes just come stright back from the cats and into the mufflers.

You could take the car to a custom exhaust shop and they could fab up an H crossover on your current setup. You really need to have that to properly balance the exhaust gasses.
General rule of thumb is H for sound and X for performance.
What he said. I was going to go with the Pro-Chamber for my Mac LTs, but ended up having the exhaust guy do an X-pipe instead. I think the boost in power is probably marginal between the X- and H-pipe configurations, but I wanted all I could get.
