Default Auto Transmission Temp. Sender Question

ok, I cant figure out where to install the sender on my car, a buddy told me i can tap the line that runs to the tranny cooler near the front of the engine, sounds dangerous tapping lines, another buddy says i can drill a hole in my tranny pan , tap it and install the sender, but do i really wanna drill a hole in the pan???? Some advice from the pros would be nice

get proper fittings (Brass T fitting) to tap into the line going into the cooler. i believe its the top line on the transmission case.

Seems to me the place to install them is in the line returning from the cooler, once you have the fittings. Idea being to know the temp of the oil going into the working transmission. Or maybe you need to know what the temp is of the oil coming out? Maybe better get two of them?

Any road, how will you know what the temps mean? What is the "normal" operating temperature of the automatic transmission oil?

I'd tap into the cooling line return. I do have to ask, what good will the gauge do? You cannot change anything except to add an in line cooler.
