Default Downshift on V6 5-speed transmission

Hi, I have a 2007 Mustang V6 w/ 5 speed manual transmission. When I downshift from 2nd to 3rd gear, I have to wait until it gets down to under 25 mph before it will actually go into gear. Does this sound normal? Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing your mean 3rd to 2nd? That doesn't sound too bad. You don't want to downshift at too high a speed or you can end up bouncing off the rev limiter.

Default 2nd gear

I have a 2005 V-6. My rule of thumb is that in 2nd rpms are going to be APPROXIMATELY what the mph are: 40 mph is about 4,000 rpm. It isn't normal to have to let it get below 35 mph to downshift, although for normal slowing down at a stop light I let it get below 30 mph for engine longevity. I've downshifted to 2nd at 45 mph in an emergency without any complaints from the transmission.

Hi again. The gear shift will not even go into the 2nd gear slot(?) until the car is right at 24 mph when you are down shifting. It simply won't go in if you are downshifting at a higher speed. Any ideas??? Thanks for any help.

Thats not right. Either take it back to the dealership and let them have a look at it or the car may just need to be broken in somemore before it becomes more compliant. I dont remember having to go down to 24mph for 2nd at all.

I actually tried this today on my way home, 06 4.0 5speed. I could go in to any gear I wanted at any speed. There was no binding or resistance in any of the gears. I would agree with one of the other posters, something is definately not right, needs to go to the dealer.

The tranny is synchronized... have you tried goosing the gas as you shift?
