2005 V6 Dual Exhaust. Pros and Cons of X-Pipe vs H-Pipe vs Y-Pipe vs Straight Pipes?
I know there are a bunch of thread on mufflers and want not but after doing a search and finding out what every has and what brands they recomend i still have a few questions.
What are the pro's and con's of the three types of dual systems
True dual (no H/X pipe, just independant tubes for each side)
X-Piped
H-Piped
Y-Pipe after the initial Y
Can anyone help me with this? I dont care about brands as of right now there are enough threads to give me that answer. I mainly want to know preformance wise. I keep hearing this backpressure issue which i'm still cloudy on. haha, if you couldn't tell i'm new to the car game.
Thanks in Advanced

True dual will lessen the back pressure and probably cause horsepower loss.
Xpipe would be good for cars that have high horsepower or forced induction because it allows the exhaust gases to escape faster they generally dont sound good on stock or close to stock v6's
Hpipe sounds better, works well will with keeping back pressure in a range that helps the flow of exhuast gases escape.
Ypipe is pretty much the same thing as the Hpipe but is cheaper due to less piping and you wont get the deep Hpipe bubble sound because there is no cross over in the midpipe region.
The whole back pressure issue goes something like this: Back pressure will help "scavenge" or "extract" the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder when the exhaust valves open up.

No HP loss. Torqu loss of a few pounds. No big deal. The added mid-high RPM performance gain, sound and added MPG, totally outweigh any negatives.

"X" is what FORD designed for the V6. Just works best at higher RPMs.

Never actually heard any "H" pipe V6s.

Don't even bother with this setup.

Scavenging is only for very high-performance engines that are specifically tuned. A 4.0 V6 doesn't have enough flow to create the high volume numbers for "scavenging". We're talking race motors here folks, not our daily drivers.
Nice term, very overused.
My 2 cents.

I have the H pipe on my car with JBA shorty's and GT mufflers. I like the looks of the duals, with the GT bumper cover. The sound is terrific at all speeds,I can hear the radio and the passengers talk,No significant change in MPG and the performance is better,of course I have a CAI with a 91 octane tune.Planning FI in the future.
I dont know why I chose brand H over brand X or Y but as satisfied as I am with the current set up I dont think I'd change the pipes....

I'd be interested to hear if there is a noticable difference in sound between H and X.
Shouldn't matter if you are running GT mufflers.
Thanks

well I am not sure how to do it and I dont have any assistants to help.
watching and listening to this clip it seems like the sounds are identical,,,even the burnout..lol
I have a digital movie cam...but as I said no help in pulling off the video.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. From what i gather I'm gonna be looking at the true dual or the H-pipe. Also thanks for clearing up the backpressure issue, since my 6pack wont be doing race car numbers i dont have to worry about the backpressure. I assume, true duals will be cheaper than an H pipe. But of the two which has better preformance gains? over all... true duals with give me the low end torque loss, but better mid-high preformance? as apposed to the H which will do what?

I guess I cheaped out on the H pipe as far as brands go. The installer just took a piece of exhaust pipe, probably 2 1/2 " and fabricated one. measured, contoured ,shaped and welded on. The holes in the exhaust pipe where they were welded together probably wouldnt look as you thought, but do equalize the pressure. The finished product looks good to me.
As far as headers I am kind of partial to the JBA shorty's,ceramic coated. They look good and very easy to install,,,a cave man could do it....in a couple hours
I got a custom made h pipe with the american thunder exhausts. Sounds AMAZING! I will post a video soon.

Good quote Mr J,
I remember the quote back in my day "If it's too loud, you're too old".
Well, at 97 dB at cold idle, I'm still running with the young 'ins!
A few of the Stang drivers I hang with were born after I graduated HS.
Sometimes ya feel old regardless...
