Default What is the best way to paint plastic?

I am installing a plastic triple pillar gauge pod and gauges (along with nitrous) in my Mustang on Saturday and the pod came in black. The issue is that I have a medium dove gray interior. I ordered the medium dove gray plastic paint from a Ford dealer, but need to know what is the best way to get a high quality coat on the pod? The instructions with the pod say just clean with alcohol and paint, but I am curious if a primer is in order. Can anyone with experience help me out?

I've painted my Stang's interior like around the door handles and around the CD player and such. I sanded it first, then put primer and finally a coat of paint and it was really smooth and shiny. It worked great. But if your pod says to clean with alcohol and then paint, I'd just do what it says. But then again, if your pod is black and so is the outside of your car, it would be pretty wicked if you would paint alot of stuff inside your car black to match it.

I wouldn't think it would hurt to rub it down with steel wool then use alcohol to clean it. Look for a good quality primer for plastics and make sure to use a few light coats rather than 1 heavy coat. Happy painting!
