Default 2006 V6 Mustang Fuel gauge issue

After coming home from school rounding a turn at 35 my backpack hit hard on the left inside part of the trunk. after that my fuel went all the way to E and stayed there. i went to check it again and it only went up halfway to what i had before. i duno if you damage the fuel system somehow by hitting on the inside of the trunk but that may have happend. any thoughts?

If the gauge is erratic or throws a code you need to take it to the dealer. There is a Technical Service Bulletin on this (#06-10-13).

If the gauge dropped to empty and reset after you restarted the car I wouldn't do anything right away.

My fuel gauge dropped to E once. I stopped and restarted the car and the gauge went back to working normal and havent had a repeat since.
If you have high sulfur in your gas supply it will cause problems with the sending unit. A bottle of fuel system cleaner may be all thats required if it happens again.

The other fuel problem I've experienced twice is the yellow Gas Cap light luminating on the instrument panel. I have a locking cap and I suspect it is the culprit but the probem is so sporadic that I dont worry about. I remove and reinstall the cap and the light clears a few miles later.

As far as something rolling around in the trunk, like the backpack you describe, I dont know how it could cause a problem. The access to your fuel pump/sending unit is located under the rear seat. The only thing in the trunk is the emergency fuel reset button that can trip in an accident. I dont thnk it has any function with the gas gauge.

the same thing happened to me the other day. it was raining and i did like 2 donuts in a parking lot and the chime came on and the gas gauge dropped to e. then as i watched it went back to normal then dropped to e again and the chime came on again. then it took awhile to creep back up to where its supposed to be and it hasn't happened since. ive already had it be incorrect in the past after filling the tank and tried the techron fuel system cleaner, which only seems to be a bandaid fix. i guess it might be time to take it in.
