Default Mustang GT Mufflers, the same as V6 Mufflers?

This question may have already been answered.Couldn't find the answer in any searches,so any responses will be greatly appreciated.I've been told by numerous muffler shops here in the okc metro area that the Gt muffler for 2005-2008 V8 mustangs is the exact 3 chamber muffler that Ford uses on the 2005-2008 V6 mustangs.Even though the part numbers are different, that their still the same muffler.I realize the muffler shops would rather sell you a flowmaster, etc, for your mustang.Any helpful information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Clinton in okc,ok.

No they are not the same. I've heard a clip of a V6 with a takeoff GT muffler and it sounded a lot louder and throatier.

toyally different and u could use it on a 6er. if u wanna go w/ a cheap mod for ur exhaust thats probably ur best bet b/c u can find 2 brnad new 1s for like $75. but idk if u wanna go dual or not so its really up to u. if ur looking for an axle back, just go w/ a real aftermarket one, not the gt.

a single GT muffler will improve the performance quite a bit over a single stock one and it will bolt right in. But duals sound nicer...IMHO

The GT Muffler IS different

I've upgraded my v6 from stock to a single GT muffler. Big difference. The exhaust tip is smaller on the stock v6 and if you look down inside of the exhaust tip you can see that it necks down inside the muffler to a hole only a couple inches in diameter. The GT muffler has a 1/2" larger diameter tip than the v6 muffler and if you look down it you can see that it stays the same diameter through the muffler. Why go to a muffler shop in the first place to get one or have it put on? They're dirt cheap to buy and only take about 20min to install yourself.

The stock V6 muffler is a real dog for some reason. Don't know why they don't just go with the GT muffler for both.

If they went true duals with the v6 and gave it a decent tune and air intake from the factory, then there would only be about a 50hp difference between the stock v6 and v8. For purely marketing reasons they want to have a bigger difference on stock vehicles.

So you're saying they de-tune the V6 intentionally?

Of course not. I can't imagine the bean counters who set up the marketing plans doing anything like that.

I finally installed my GT take off muffler this past weekend. I was able to do it without lifting the car. It took quite a bit of muscle to get the old one off after removing two of the hangers, and more muscle to get the new one on, but it was worth it. The car has a bit deeper rumble now and the polished tip looks great. The weather is too crappy right now for me to see whether I really feel a difference driving.

You'll find the tone gets much better as you put the first few hundred miles on it. I don't know what the science behind it is, but the muffler needs to be broken in for awhile before it starts sounding good. Get's even better if you put a CAI on.
