Hello all- I have a 2006 GT Automatic, and when I got it a few months ago the little orange shift indicator was stuck on park. Not a big deal at the time, but since then the cover that hides the "guts" of the shifter has magically disappeared as well and the wife is tired of counting clicks to put it in R and D.
I took a pic of what it looks like after I removed the bezel around the shifter:
Here are some pics, i am quite familiar with these shifters, lol! the red indicator is just attached to the black strap that goes around the handle. It probably broke apart and once you get it apart you should be able to repair. Let me know if you need instrctions and i will send you some.

Ah ha ! i should have looked at your photo first i guess. You have an early model shifter assembly that Ford has been telling me they never made!!!
I can tell because your screw that your handle on is offset towards the driver side of the car. You will not have the plastic arm that i sent in the pics earlier. You will have a metal post sticking up. Once you get it apart, you should still be able to fix though. The console comes out very easy so no need to worry.
Three Ford dealers here only list one part# for these shifters for 05 thru 09 models.I would bet you have an 05 or early os model for sure and probably a convertible.

Wow - thank you SO MUCH!! My car isn't a convertible, but I think its an early model 06 so that fits with your diagnosis.
I'm going to take out the console tomorrow morning and see what's what. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix!
Thanks again!
A word of advice. I've had this problem with my shifter twice because my wife spills things. When you take the shifter apart you need to clean the back plastic belt and the tracks it runs in with alcohol and a q-tip. I spray mine with silicone spray before re- installing because the spray evaporates and leaves a dry lubricant behind that is not sticky.
Best of luck!
I know this post is a few months, but had the same exact problem yesterday. How did the fix go for you? Is this a fairly easy fix? Does the plastic strap just snap back on to the shifter?

Ok, so where the heck do i get one of those shifters...
I have a v6 06 Mustang..
and the plastic black deal gets binded up when I put it in park,
so the whole shifter box deal pops up...
But then when i slide it back in reverse or drive is sits flesh like it should to the consol.
It obvious the plastic got messed up some how,
I would like to get a new one of those... But it just makes sense to replace the whole darn thing...
I hope you can help a girl out, im tired of it looking ghetto. lol
after reading these posts, i understood why indicator wasnt moving i put car in low gear and pulled top of the slider back with needle nose pliars, i drilled a very small hole in center of slider about 1/4 of an inch from the edge.i used a very small tie wrap and looped it around the black plastic bezel pulled it tight pulling slider into bezel and snipped excess off, works like a champ and u can barely seeit
