Default XM Radio install in 2006 Mustang GT

Alright. So I've done some research about how to install XM in my car. I found that it is simple in a 2007+ because there is a audio jack in the middle console.

Does anyone have XM installed in their 2006? If so how did you do it? I'm thinking on a budget of 400$.

I do this out of hate for northern virginia radio. It's horrible.

Thanks to anyone in advance.

For less than $400 you can get a factory Sirius kit, that's not too difficult to install. It's controlled by the Aux button on the Shaker 500/1000.

I have a 06 GT without the shaker and here is what I bought to get it done.

1) XpressRC Amazon.com: Audiovox XMCK30PXM Xpress-RC Receiver: Home Audio & Theater

Nice color display that looks good on the dash. I mounted mine using the supplied adhesive pad and placed it in between the two center air vents. The best part about that receiver is I can take it out of the car and listen to it in the house too.

2) Audiovox XMF1 adapter Amazon.com: Audiovox XMFM1 XM SATELITTE RADIO FM Direct Adapter: Home Audio & Theater

Yes, this is a FM Modulator, but it connects directly to the antenna input on the stock radio. I do not experience any interference issues common to over-the-air FM modulators. This worked best for me since I do not have the shaker with an AUX input.

3) Wiring. I installed the GPS antenna on the rear shelf behind the back seats. If you look in the trunk there's a section of the shelf with no metal underneath. Drill a hole and run the GPS cable through the trunk and down the driver side of the car. It's a piece of cake to hide the wire along the door sill.

I mounted the FM modulator above the trans tunnel just rear of the shifter. There's plenty of room under there, just be sure to secure the wires with tie wraps so that they don't interfer or get scraped up by the shifter.

You'll need to tap into some switched power to run everything, but all in all the job only takes a couple hours. Well below your $400 budget.

I did XM in the 08 with the Shaker 500. Uses the AUX button and displays the programming on the shakers display. Included an iPod interface as well.

Best way to plug in XM to 2005-2006 Shaker 500 without using an FM mod? - Ford Mustang Forums

Its been talked about here before.

I like the XM channel line up better. At the time I did it, XM and sirus were independent and I doubted the sanity of sirus for spending so much on Stern.

I used the Audiovox FM modulator to install my old Xpress receiver in the car. I wish I'd had a $400 budget, otherwise I would have popped for the AUX input harness or just purchased a new stereo with a built-in or external receiver. You can do it for about $100 with the Xpress and FM modulator setup.
