I am running 275/40/17 on stock bullitt style rims. I have no rubbing and have gotten 2 years out of my current pair. On these cars, especially the ones that arent lowered, rubbing is not as big of an issue as it was on the Foxes. The problem now is that the stock rim can only hold so big of a tire. My 275's are not even close to rubbing...

275 on a 17 inch rim bubbles IMO. The widest u should go on 17s is 255. Your better off getting 18's and going 18x10 back 18x9 front and running 285-315 back and 255 front. I run 285 back and 255 front and looks good no rubbing.

And you have less traction than if you were running 245's if not worse. Get those 275's off of there or get bigger rims.

You didn't say if you're getting new wheels but I assume so since you're asking what's the biggest that will fit without rubbing. Look up the specs on mine, that's prob as wide as you can go but gotta match the rims to the tires with the right offset and everything.

Thumbs up 255/50-17

The stock wheels are 8" wide. Following tire manufacturer's recommendations, the widest tire I found was a 255/50. There are people running 275/40's. They'll fit (but as far as I've found) they're outside the manufacturer's spec for the tire. Example, 275/40-17 NT555 calls out for at least a 9" wheel....

I decided to go with the Nitto Invo 255/50-17. I'm happy with them. They're pretty sticky, great in the rain and quite....

This is a link to a few pics of them...

Traction has not really been a problem for me. Wheel hop, on the other hand, is terrible. I just priced a 10" rim for the rear today and plan on ordering a pair for the rear soon, and wrapping with 315.

A thought. I was gonna put 255s on my stock 17 inch rims. I found a set of GT500 takeoff tires and rims for a few hundred more than the tires I was gonna get. 255 45 front and 285 40 rear. They usually go for $900 but I have seen them as low as 800. Mine had less than 50 miles and look brand new.

Different tires won't help your wheel hop one bit. Only suspension upgrades can do that. I still had tons of wheel hop with 315/35's when NA, but none after boosted once I redid my rear suspension.

I run a 305 MT drag radial on 18x10 rim and have no issues. Tires don't stick out past fender well and don't rub.

315's will not work correctly on a 10" rim (uless you are talkig about drag race rubber which are no "real" 15's). You need at least a 1" rim to run a 315 ad the perfect offset or it will rub.

What make/model 315's are you getting?

I have 18x9 frt rims with 255/45-18, and 18x10 rear rims with 275/40-18 but you can go up to 285's in back if you want great size no rubbing car is also lowered nothing rubs over 20,000 miles on this set-up. check my profile to see pictures.

Traction is used in 4 different directions. All of them are worse when using the wrong tire. And YOU ARE having traction issues compared to runing the correct tire/rim, you just don't know because you have not compared what you are runnig to "right"

Pinching a tire that is too big on a rim can cause or contribute too wheel hop problems. By pinching that tire on there you have changed the spring characteristics/ frequency of the tire.

On top of that there are no "off the shelf" rims available for the S197 that are 11" wide and have the correct offset to get the tire to fit without rubbing. You have to do a custom rim to get it set up correctly.

^^^^^^ Understood. I was not incinuating that the tires would help the wheel hop. LCA's are on my near future mod list.

I looked and looked, but the only 1" rim I could find was for a bicycle!

Do not know yet, and it may not be 315. Went to a local tire and rim shop that does alot of Mustang stuff and we went through an hour long conversation on what I need, what I want, and what will fit.... I am sure I will end up with the right set up.

I do not run this car hard, I got a great deal on the 275's and have had a pleasant experience. Again, I state... this is not a RACE CAR. I got the wider tires simply because I liked the look and wanted to experiement.

Thanks for the suggestions from everyone, and for the most part I agree with you all. The original post asked for the widest tire that wont rub... I simply stated that my tires do not rub. Please do not think that I am Mustang ignorant for not running the "ideal" tire wheel set up.
